Mr. Kizer has taught two years of public school and eight years at an independent school. He has a B.S. degree from Freed-Hardeman University and a Master's degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Music moves minds, expands horizons, and allows one to view the world and its components in ways never before imagined. It transforms ordinary things and lessons into extraordinary tales and makes learning fun. In the words of Ash Kizer's Bonus Point Band: âYour mind is a muscle... You can do anything When it's under your command.â Research suggests that music can be an invaluable tool for teaching and learning. Since its first publication in 1983, Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences has convinced educators all over the world to open their minds to affecting the âmusical-rhythmic intelligence.â Using music to teach specific lessons in and out of the classroom is a relatively new tool, but it is quickly growing support even in the information age. âThe concept isn't new to me,â says Kizer, âI grew up watching Sesame Street, and singing Bible verses in Sunday school.â Researchers have proven that music is a powerful motivational tool that increases students' attention spans. Many believe that it increases the retention of content as well. Ash Kizer, seasoned teacher, musician, and performer, has always incorporated music into his daily lessons at Adamsville Elementary School near Birmingham, Alabama. By combining his love for music and enthusiasm in educating, he's created a unique repertoire for his classroom, providing students with options they never knew possible. Instead of awarding âbonus pointsâ on every test, Kizer created his own âBonus Point Band,â giving students the option of becoming more involved in the classroom, their curriculum and, ultimately, their futures! Kizer touches on all disciplines when performing for students with the Bonus Point Band. Song topics include: geography, botany, mythology, geometry, opposites, and sequencing. With song titles such as âBoo Hoo Toodle-Loo Ms. McGoo,â the words are fun to recite and sing, and lessons are easily remembered with catchy hooks and beats. As a violinist, guitarist, and trumpet player, Ash Kizer knows music. But most importantly, he knows kids. As a youth minister and elementary school teacher, he has taught children of all ages, learning how their minds work and develop. When his music is introduced to children, the way they view and absorb their education is changed forever. In the words of the Bonus Point Band, âYour mind is a muscle.â Work it.
