Mixed-Up Files
Mixed-Up Files  (TpT Seller) re: The Hunger Games Grammar Unit: Worksheets and Graphic Organizers
I love the idea of using this novel for grammar; I have a program now that does the same thing, but with random sentences from classic works. I know my kids would love some Hunger Games in the mix!
My question is: exactly what skills do the worksheets include? In the previews I looked at, I could only find practice with identifying parts of speech or phrases. Do you address usage errors, style choices, anything else?
Hoping this will work for my class--thanks!

The Language Arts Classroom
The majority of the worksheets are identifying and manipulating certain grammar structures. For instance with verbals, students would be asked to change a gerund to an infinitive and then look at the effect on the meaning of the sentence; with verbs, students would change a passive verb to active and look at the effect. Another portion has students analyze why certain parts of the book contain "fragments" which then leads to discussions about different types of writing and writing in a character's voice, such as Haymitch. So while this unit does have students identifying types of sentences, phrases, clauses, verbals, parts of speech - they also are learning to manipulate the language. Does that help? I hope so!

If you would like a larger sample of the unit, chapter one is free: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Hunger-Games-Eight-Parts-of-Speech-Diagnostic-Tool-239955

I also updated the preview so that you would have a better idea of what I mean. I added two graphic organizers and a sample of grammar analysis. Please let me know if you have other questions! Thanks. :)

Yes, it will - and you will not have to pay more. You will get a notification as I add chapters. I just added chapter 7, answer key included.

I am so happy that these are helpful. :)

I don't know. Which one of my products are you trying to open? I can try to send it to you in a different format. Have you tried taking it to a print shop (local, or like a Staples) and asking them if they can open and print it for you? I know that might be a pain, so let me know if I can send you a different format and I will absolutely try.

Buyer re: The Hunger Games Grammar Unit: Worksheets and Graphic Organizers
I am just wondering how the lesson are organized. Are they organized according to chapter? I read this every year with my 8th graders and we have great time whilst we learn, so I would love to be able to put grammar in with it as well. CAn you say come and observe me now?? LOL
Thanks! Jenn

The Language Arts Classroom
Yes, they are organized according to chapters. I pulled sentences from each chapter, and did a grammar focus with those sentences. For instance chapter seven covers conjunctions. The sentences are from chapter seven, and students will study different conjunctions while reading chapter seven. (Does that make sense? I hope!) The preview also has more specifics about what each chapter covers. Let me know if you need it in a different format, or let me know if you would like a sample.

Anyway, haha, yes, my students grumbled less about doing grammar when it was connected to The Hunger Games. My students love that book.

I hope this helps!! Lauralee

Thanks for some great materials on Old Man and the Sea, including the ones I bought and the free one. For some reasons, you (or the site) left out the answer key for quiz on section one of OMS. However, today is a holiday; we've got to get going on this tomorrow and your materials have me ready. Again. Thanks.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught at the high school level for over eight years, instructed ACT courses through a community college, and written lesson plans and units for Book Rags. I taught for a year at an alternative school, grades 6-12. I also have written in the educational channel at Bright Hub and for the educational section at Everything Mom.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am very systematic. Organization and structure are key for a safe and productive learning environment. When students understand expectations, they are willing to strive to meet them. With my teaching materials, I have clear instructions and diverse activities. With the introduction of the Common Core, a need for valuable and diverse grammar activities came to the teaching community. I teach the bulk of my grammar assignments from literature, so students can learn grammar as a natural part of language arts. Students learn best if their teachers provide them with a variety of learning methods. Creating so many activities is time consuming, especially in a world where time is so short. I am so happy to provide and buy lesson plans, worksheets, and testing materials.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

In over ten years of teaching, I have applied for and received five classroom grants. My master's research project was published in ERIC Digest.
