Hi! I just purchased this and I am really looking forward to using it. My only question is on the construction paper...is it really 18x24? We only have 12x18 at school, and I have never seen that size. Where did you get the larger paper? Thanks!

Can you offer the package in an editable format? I teach Spanish and am thinking this would be a great way to have students learn about the different Spanish speaking countries. I would want my students to make a similar project in Spanish.

Hello there - Due to the restraints of clipart artists, I am not able to offer this in an editable format. However, I have been looking at editing this project myself and offering it as a country report instead. Do you have certain topics that you require your student to research in their projects? I could try to include those. I also offer a Country Research Flipbook that could meet your needs. You can find it as one of the featured products in my store.

Hi,

I just downloaded your file about bibliographic instruction for our youngest students (thanks, btw!), but I'm a bit confused by what's in the zip file. For example, on the page with graphics talking about "whose idea was it anyways?", the text seems to be all blurred. Are there supposed to be visible written directions on that sheet, or am I missing something?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Dan - The zip file contains an explanation page (a PDF file) and a folder of images that you could use to create your own bibliography. Oftentimes blurry PDF files have to do with your version of Adobe Reader. Are you using the newest version? If you are a Mac user, this link provided by TpT may help!

When I downloaded it, it downloaded as a secure pdf. I would like to put it into my research powerpoint but it won't allow it since it is protected.

Hi Angela - I do save my projects as secure PDFs. This is actually required by nearly all of the artists that I purchase my clip art from. If the document wasn't secured, then anyone would be able to steal the pictures from the document. What exactly are you trying to put into a PPT? I might be able to help you out if I knew more specifically what you were trying to do.

Could you explain a little more about the ABC Research lesson you have posted. Do the students find a type of vegetable like celery or turnip? I am not sure how to introduce it to my students. Do they just pick a topic and then find an example for each letter of the alphabet?

That is exactly right!! You pick the topic, and they find examples. For instance, you could choose fruits ... And they could write apple next to the a, and banana next to the b, and cantaloupe next to the c. Easy peasy, and the kids enjoy it :)

Yes, I was thinking maybe some Social Studies for 1st graders. Egypt, Abe and George, Pilgrims, Groundhogs (related to Groundhog Day), National Symbols... just to name a few! LOL As I said I have already purchased all you have made. Is there any way you could put lines on the future ones you do? First graders need lines to write neatly and be able to re-read what they wrote. I went ahead and cut and pasted single lines on all the ones I have already purchased, but it was a lot of work. Just 3-4 single lines per box work great. Once again thanks for creating such a wonderful product!

When I have completed them with my own first grade classes, I have found that we are doing so much of the research together in a guided fashion that giving them a "grade" would be moot. All the kids would get the same grade. I could consider a rubric. Could you give me some points that you would like to see assessed?

Karen C. re: My First Research Project: Owls
FYI: Just wanted to say that I purchased this unit last year and it was so helpful. We are in the middle of doing owl research this week and again it has been wonderful. Today we were labeling the body parts of an owl and I noticed (WELL the kids noticed--some are more observant than me!) that there was two mistakes. There is no box to write the word eye. Secondly, we just read 2 nonfiction books that told us that the feathers stick up on top of the owl's head looks like ears but it is not. That the owl's ears are located on the body itself. I did not download this again this year bc I already had a copy from last year so you may have made these corrections. If not, I thought you would like to make these corrections bc the unit is fabulous.
Thanks,

I am considering doing a "My First Research Project" for African and Australian animals. We have about 450 students in our school, I think that there are 16 regular classroom teachers. I don't want to get your hopes up, because there never seems to be money for fun stuff like this, but I thought I'd give it a try with them. At the very least, I'm going to use it in my class. Have you tried a pfdconverter online like the one at www.freepdfconvert.com?? If you are still struggling with this, I would grant you the right to use this one set of frames for your use in a PPT. Your product should not be a freebie, as that would really equal giving away the frames. Many designers request that the product be in a PDF or flattened, because it is SOOOOO easy for someone to right click to copy and paste the images in their own document. So, if a teacher bought your product, they could have the frame as a bonus. Do you know what I mean?

The Library Patch
The Library Patch  (TpT Seller)
Hi Kristy - If you have a projector and can connect that computer to the Internet, you should be all set. Simply go to http://express.smarttech.com/#. It will give you the option to "Open an existing Notebook file." You can click on that and then open the file that you download from here. You can also download the SMART Notebook software for free. Once downloaded and installed, you can open the file. Hope that this helps :)
If you choose to download, please let me know if you need any further help.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught third and fourth grade for twelve years and learned that many nine and ten-year-olds have not only lots of spunk and energy, but a great sense of humor! I was lucky enough to teach two cycles of a third to fourth grade loop. I was a self-contained classroom and taught all subject areas. My passion for both literature and burgeoning technology sent me in pursuit of a degree as a school librarian. I have been working as a school library media specialist for the last five years in a PreK to grade 5 elementary school. I have recently discovered the amazing world of educators sharing their bountiful ideas, lessons, worksheets, and units on websites like Teachers Pay Teachers. As a former teacher, and current library media specialist, I was thrilled with the idea of finding new materials created by other teachers and sharing some of my materials with other librarians. So, if you happen to stumble upon my site, send your librarian here. I hope to have much to share, but I also have much to learn.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am a very "unquiet" librarian!! My library is a constant barrage of kids, laughter, questions, answers, gaming, computer use, and of course, BOOKS! I believe that students learn best by doing and answering their own questions. I also firmly believe that today's librarian needs to be aware of the recent shift in education. I refer to the Common Core Standards daily and have tweaked many of my existing lessons to better align with them.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Ahh ... if only I had something impressive and nationally recognized to list here! Sadly, I don't. However, I have had a few little ones dub me "The Best Liberrian Ever", been told that I am "pretty cool" and been referred to the as that "awesome book lady." No, not renown honors, but I would take them over a plaque any day.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I received my high school diploma from a small school in upstate New York, my Education Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Potsdam State University, and my Library Media Specialist Master's Degree from Mansfield University.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Not only do I have the best job in school, but I have the best family at home! I am married to a great guy, one who is pretty patient with my love affair with all things techie, and two teenagers. As far as teenagers go, they are keepers. Both are active in sports, academics, and clubs. Life is good!!
