Nicole Heimer  (TpT Seller) re: Greek & Latin Roots-prefix & suffix-Common Core Aligned Vocabulary -Olympians
I have paid for and downloaded this resource! How creative! I taught roots in my fifth grade class last year, but we focused on one root per week with 10 words per root that the kids had to learn. I think this program is much more well-rounded and the students will have fun searching for words containing their current roots! I do want to let you know about something little that I came across on page 32 and 35-37... the blue box around the perimeter of the page on page 32 actually cuts off part of the text box at the bottom (for roots mis- and -ness) On pages 35-37, it lies right on top of the bottom of the text boxes at the bottom of the page.

Hi! As this year is ending, I am gearing up for next year already! I came across the Reading Olympians and can't wait to implement this next year. I intend on starting at the lowest level and going all the way through the programs. For the journal, I would like to make it 2 to a page in a booklet form. Is there an editable form(where only the whole page to be sized not necessarily to edit the content) that I can do this on the computer. If not, I can do this on the copier at the school. Thank you for all the hard work and thought that has gone into these set! It has got me excited and I know it will excite my students as well!

Hi! I remember learning about roots in school and still use that knowledge today. I would love to use your program with my current class, but am confused as to which product(s) to buy. I am teaching a K/1 combination. My kinders are typical kinders, but my first graders are advanced in their reading. Which program would most suit my firsties? The first grade program, the Junior Olympians program, or another one? (The kinder program would probably be perfect for my kinders.)
Thanks! Camille

Thank you for your interest! We would suggest the Reading Olympian program. It is the first in the intermediate group of programs and teaches 100 total root. The following programs (Warriors and Trojans) each review 50 from the Olympian program and introduce 50 new. Reading Olympians is founded on the most common roots which provides a fantastic foundation for those new to root instruction:) PLEASE email us if you have additional questions.

I love this resource! I am so excited to use it, however, just before I started printing I noticed that many of the top 'cards'... where the word is - the words are running into or out of the top of the box. Is there any way these can be fixed? Or I could fix them for myself if I had an editable copy.
Thank you for your time.

I just bought jr. olympians. I was looking at the story of greek roots and noticed that you have fiction=not true, real and nonfiction=pretend. Could I get a corrected version with the appropriate definitions? Also, do you have "answer keys" or completed graphic organizers like the intermediate version? I had looked at the free Nike and liked the examples for the students to use to complete their graphic organizers and expected them in this unit also. Thanks so much for your help! -Melissa

The Reading Olympians
The Reading Olympians  (TpT Seller)
We use the bigger word cards for our word wall. Students illustrate a picture related to the root. We leave all the roots up on our wall so students can refer to them all the time, and they really do all the time! The smaller word cards are used for flash cards. We put ours on a ring so they can look through them as the progress. Let us know if you have any other questions!!! :)

I've been using The Reading Olympians with my 4th and 5th graders and we all LOVE it! I've been looking forward and wanting to prepare future sets of roots for my students and I want give them professional documents without errors. These are the things I am seeing on my download:

Poseidon:
- Raps: mis and ness raps print below the page border
- bene and dis root boxes print below the page border
- est root boxes print on top of page border

Athena:
- in root boxes print below page border

Nemesis:
- mono rap should say "Mono means one" and it says "Mono means on"

Iris:
- Biblio root rap says if you want to read about someone, read a bibliography. Shouldn't that be a biography?
- graph rap should say "Graph means write" and it says "Graph mean write"
- On the fill in the word assessment none of the answers fit for #9. We study _____ in Social Studies. The only answer left is macro.

Apollo:
- The rap for meter should say use instead of us in the last line.
- I don't think there should be a - after means to on the -ous rap.

Hercules:
- On the fill in the word assessment, #10, I think it should read The children ate too much sugar and were all ______, not we all ______.

Olympian:
- The para rap should say side by side and not sided.
- Did you mean to repeat the word silly on the rid rap?
- On the fill in the word assessment shouldn't the answer choice for #10 be anthropologist and not anthropology?

Thank you for your help!

I am a homeschooler and would love to implement this great idea into our curriculum. I have an 8 1/2 y/o boy and an advanced almost 6 y/o daughter. They are always skeptical when I introduce anything different and "fun"! Rightly so, b/c then I usually lose my confidence and blow 'it' anyway. So before I buy these, my question is do you have any videos, maybe on Youtube or something showing this actually being presented???? I really hope so! Please let me know ASAP possible, please! Thank you soooooo much for the wonderful idea...I just hope I can figure out how to implement it with my 2 children AND have them catch on to the idea that it's actually fun!
Sincerely,

It should read individual or whole group meaning each student can complete a dictionary or create one as a class:) We are uploading an edited copy. Please let us know if you have more questions. Thanks for bringing that to our attention!! Enjoy!

What is the difference between the two reading programs? Olympians and warriors. I am a 5th grade teacher and don't know which to purchase.

Thanks

Olympians was the original program. It is a great introduction to root instruction. Warriors takes the first 50 roots from Olympians for mastery and then 50 new roots to learn. The graphic in Warriors are definitely more appealing to older students. However, I teach 5th grade and I implemented Olympians in the beginning of the year and my students loved those graphics as well! We are now starting Warriors and they love those too! Both program are great for root instruction! Let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you! :)

Could you send a template so we could make our own data form with the testing that our school uses? As an example we use MAP testing 3 times a year and F & P along with ACCESS for our ELL population. I know crazy.
Thanks

Hello, I purchased a Reading Warriors disk from you at the reading conference at YSU last Saturday. The disk fails to load on any of my computers. I remember you saying this could be an issue. Can you let me know how I can get a new copy of the Reading Warriors? Thanks so much!

I have purchased the complete set of materials and am about ready to start using them with 4th-6th graders in reading classes but have a few questions. Where do the students look to find the information to add to their graphic organizers? (examples of words, etc.) Where is the parent letter you referenced in some of your sales material? The example of the word wall picture on your web materials (graph/draw) doesn't make sense to me. Why did they draw a school? Shouldn't they draw something with that root in it? Thanks for clarifying! Susan in MN

Thanks for you interest in the program:)

When we introduce each root we brainstorm words that contain that root. We have a list in our plans in case they struggle with coming up with them. Some are more challenging than others. They will get in a swing of it as they practice. Others that use the program have a student that guides small groups by having a list or using the computer as a resource. There are numerous sites that list roots. I will tell you that we are working on a teacher's resource guide that included words. We are adding additions as the program has gained in popularity. The parent letter should be there, we did reorganize the format of the file and if it is not---it should be! Please email me at twingirlsceej@aol.com and I will send it right to you and update the product on TPT. The word wall cards are may be my favorite part of the program. They drew a school to represent "graph" means to write or draw. When our kiddos illustrate a root they also present it to the class so we are all on the same page:)

PLEASE email us with any questions!! The program become totally embedded in all you do as your students see that roots are everywhere and in every content area. The only disadvantage is you will have root obsessed students:)

I teach 7th grade Science, and our kids really struggle with vocabulary. Will your product be beneficial to my middle school kids?

Thanks for your interest. Here's some details on the program --we hope it helps:)

The original program-Reading Olympians-is based on 100 Greek and Latin roots. These are not content based. We were amazed what it did for our kiddos and it became popular enough we decided to create Reading Warriors. Reading Warriors reviews 50 roots from the Olympian program and 50 new roots. These 50 are content based for science, math and social studies--heavy on science and math. Here's why I think it would be cool for your kids. Not only will it help them define their vocabulary words-but they will look at words completely differently. Here are 2 example: just today Julie was teaching a math lesson introducing fractions. When she told them they told her "fract" means to break apart and "tion" means process of. My experience was I told them to look at a different perspective and they realized "spect" means to see--so it is looking or seeing a different point of view. We have these moments multiple times a day as our student see words through the eyes of roots.

We are not super objective about root instruction...LOL. We deeply believe in root instruction and believe it can improve any content area. If you would like any more information please feel free to email us at twingirlsceej@aol.com.

If you feel you may want to give it a try please make certain to purchase Reading Warriors!!! Thanks:)

I'm having a lot of problems with saving and opening the files on my hard drive. I don't know what's wrong. I'm using a PC. I clicked on the zipped document and tried to move the files to my desk top and kept getting error messages. Any ideas?

We have not had this problem with the program. It should not be a zip file it is in PDF format. If you cannot get it to download correctly please email us and we can email it to you. We will have to send you multiple emails since the file is so large but we will make it work:)

We had taken them down to edit them. They will be up shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience. However, if you plan on using all 10 sets it would less expensive to but the complete program.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

We are teaching partners and LOVE teaching reading. Together we have taught grades K,1,7,4, 5 and Title One Reading. This year we have worked together when teaching reading and have enjoyed creating and implementing The Reading Olympians. The results have been amazing and we are excited to share the materials and fun with other teachers!!

MY TEACHING STYLE

Hands on and individualized instruction! We work to teach the "whys" behind vocabulary and spelling. When students understand why a word means what it does, or is spelled the way it is, the instruction holds more meaning!
