Hi! I love your second grade word study! Will you be creating a first grade word study for the year? Or anything for kindergarten? I loop and teach first grade and second so I am very interested in these!
Thanks!

I just printed out your Social Studies Unit Plan: Human Cultures. Your description says that it is 29 pages, however, when I printed it out...it was 26 pages. I do not see the final test that you describe in the unit, it is not included in the printouts! Can you please tell me if that is what's missing from the 29 pages? Can I get a copy of your this test? Please get back to me as soon as possible. I would like to use this in my next teaching venture with my third graders. My e-mail address is:

Thanks!

Andrea-
I just did a search for "Words Their Way Spelling Inventory". This is what the list looks like for 3rd grade...

http://img.docstoccdn.com/thumb/orig/102830052.png

You will have to look up how to grade it and what each spelling stage means in terms of grouping your students into low, meduim and high. If you haven't used this inventory before it can be confusing. Hope that helps!

Hi I love your spelling program. I was getting ready to run off the spelling for the next couple of months and noticed some of the word sorts didn't match the words in the spelling lists. They were Week 6, 8, 10, 11,13. Can you change the green sentence on Week 17?

I am interested in purchasing this product. Have you changed the word lists to begin with lowercase letters? Also, when you state you have long a word lists, does that include complex vowel patterns such as ai, ay, eight?

We use the Words Their Way inventory once in the beginning of the year, again at the end of the first semester, and then a final one at the end of the year. We do one half way through because spelling groupings may changes and that provides us with documentation.

The mini lesson to introduce the pattern is on Monday with the whole class. Depending what the pattern is for that week the lesson will vary...it might be a blind sort where the kids have to figure out what the pattern is, it might be listening to a particiular sound (i.e. short a sounds) and trying to find words that would make that sound then find patterns within those words. It really just depends on what the teaching point is. Another great idea for a mini lesson is to use a student work sample (omitting the name of course) and trying to find words within that sample that would match our pattern for the week. Regardless, the mini lesson is kept short (15 min) because we will be working with these patterns all week during word work time.

Are the spelling lists separated by groups or does each child take home a list of all three? This might be confusing for young students, especially my ELL students and families.

On Monday I put the word list on the overhead and students copy ONLY their group's words in their spelling notebook. They also copy their words on a slip of paper that goes home. I go around and check to make sure the new words are spelled correctly and this list goes home so students can study from it. The list in their spelling notebook is for students to reference if we do in class word work like a word hunt. I am at a school with a great deal of ELL kids and it has hasn't been a problem so far... You could always print the sheet with the three lists and cut them into strips if you would prefer to send those home with your kiddos. For the word sort I have students sort all of the words, not just their own. The reason I do his is so students see that once they know the pattern they can apply it to any word. I also want my lower groups to be exposed to higher level vocab, even if they won't be tested on how to spell those words. That's the system that has worked for me. Let me know if you try it differently! Hope that helps!

I just purchased your product. I am excited to use the spelling this year. How do you do your "pretest" to decide what level the children are on? Do you have a copy of the pretest? Another question... do you orally dictate the spelling test (challenge), and then the children spell the word on the sorted challenge paper? Also, when all the children are on different levels, how do you administer the test? Orally in small groups? Thanks so much.
July 8, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

The Teaching Duo  (TpT Seller)
The pretest is done at the beginning of the year using the actual Words Their Way primary spelling inventory. I do not have a copy of the pretest but I found some info to help you here: http://anwsu.org/reading%20resource/spelling.pdf. The administering of the test takes some getting used to but I found that the most efficient way is to do it orally to the whole class like this: "Red #1: teeth, Blue #1: between, Green #1: angry. Red #2: dream, Blue #2 least...." and so on. Once you get a flow it is quick--I suggest numbering the lists though so that you don't lose your place. After all the words are given I read each group's list so that they can check to make sure they have everything. I say, "Red group, check?" and they respond "Check!" if they are no problems. Then I give each group their dictation sentence. I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions! I am happy to help!

Hello,
I just purchased your third grade word study product. I used Words Their Way in my classroom and had too many groups last year. I love how this is the same patterns but different words. What I am confused about is I can see the three different levels but how do the students know which words are theirs? The word lists are not separate. Thank you!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught second and third grade for 10 years. In the past I have been a looping teacher where I kept my same class for two years consecutively. I have had a total inclusion classroom where instruction has been differentiated to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners from special education to gifted education.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in creating a classroom culture where students are encouraged to work collaboratively with their peers. I look for ways to encourage critical thinking opportunities in my classroom where students are asked to analyze and apply new information to real world issues and situations. I believe in hands-on, project based learning where students are intrinsically motivated and engaged in the learning process.
