We totally understand! We had to get rid of our cutesy bulletin boards and monthly boards in order to make room for the Math GNOMe. We now use any wall space available as well as the blinds on our windows to display student work! I'm glad you will be able to use it in your students' notebooks for review!

I love this take on the Math Workshop model. I am going to give this a go this year. I have my GNOMe bulletin board up and ready to explain to the kiddos this week. I do wish you would have included a few sample lessons from each area to help get ideas. I am also a very "cutesy" person and would have loved some cute labels or gnome graphics to go along with this concept. I am looking forward to using this approach and can't wait to follow your blog to hear and share stories with others who are trying GNOMe this year!

I know ! That was one of our biggest challenges...how to get students to make connections and REMEMBER what was taught after a mini lesson on the rug or at their seats? It was as if the "memory police" came during transitions and took what they had just learned away. Now we all have a point of reference and a visual reminder. Thank you for your support :o)

We love allowing our students to take ownership in their learning. They end up caring more about why we learn and enjoy it so much more than us always telling them what to do. This format really gives students independence while you still remaining in control of your classroom and the contents begin learned. These are not lessons. We have provided a 1 page snapshot of the standards needed to be taught from the Common Core. Lessons and added resources can be found per state or using resources you may already have. Our book can be purchased which will give you a structure and method to implement the standards. This is more a management tool not a series. We do not have grade specific lessons. Let us know if you have any further questions.

We will be creating our own worksheets and games in the near future. Right now what we use are the games from our series, file folder games and games we bought that reinforce the Core. The paper practice sheets we use have been found from a variety of sources online...some from TpT! We compile our work packets based on the unit we are teaching and the skills we would like the students to practice. Our goal as the year ends and the summer begins is to create some of our very own games, lessons and reinforcing worksheets. But for now we use materials gathered from our series and supplement quite a bit from online finds.

Where did you get the practice papers from? Did you create them, are they from a textbook practice book? What about the games? Where are those from? Are they based on each individual mini lesson? When you get done with a mini lesson di they practice that skill or just any previously taught skill? I really want to do this next year and since I will only have 13 kids it will be the perfect size class to start it.

We are so excited that you are going to use the Math GNOMe and Common Core Four in your classroom! We get our practice papers from a variety of sources. Some of them come right from our district sanctioned math series workbooks. Others come from resource books we have or worksheets we have found online. We have also made some of our own as well. We try to differentiate our Mathematical Practice packets. So, for each unit, we have a below level, on level, and advanced packet. That way the students are working at their own instructional level. We make sure that the worksheets include problems that the students should be able to do on their own. Quick tip - at the beginning of the year teach the students to put a star next to or circle around any problem they do not know how to do. Then they can go on to the next problem or page. When you come to meet with them one-on-one, they can quickly flip to the problems they are having trouble with and ask for your help. This will also keep them from getting up to see you during Common Core Four time.
The Math Games we use come from our district-sanctioned math series as well as some games we have found online. We have found that keeping the game directions and recording sheets in plastic page protectors inside binders have been life-changing! We do not need to make hundreds of copies of recording sheets. The students are aware of the skill(s) that they want to work on and get better at and should be encouraged to focus on this skill during the independent practice. In this case, our suggestion would be to divide your Math Block in half. During the first half of your math time, you can teach the lessons and complete the assignments from your required program. During the second half of your Math Block you can teach a GNOMe minilesson and do one round of Common Core 4. The students do not need to participate in all four Common Core 4 choices everyday.
Sample Schedule for a 60 Minute Math Block:
30 Minutes - Required Math Program Lesson and Activities
10 Minutes - Math GNOMe Minilesson
20 Minutes - Common Core Four Round

We save all grading for individual
assessments or unit tests. Any work done throughout our Common Core 4 time is practice. We spend many weeks getting our kiddos independent in the 4 practices so that we are able to meet with students individually. We do not grade anything that is completed during Common Core 4. That is the great part! I know it was difficult for us to change the mindset that our inbox was not going to be full after our math block. However, you quickly realize that using the time meeting with students indviually or in small groups is WAY more beneficial and telling then the paperwork we are used to sifting through. Once the students are independent at Common Core 4 this frees you to pre teach , reinforce , or meet with small groups to practice concepts previously taught. So assessments are completed both formatively and summatively. We like also using the Common Core 4 time to do any summative assessment based on the skill that the student is working on. Now, as far as the math binders...we use them to store the math games that they play for one on the common core activities. We have a video posted on our blog to show you exactly what we have in our students math boxes. You can also keep a folder in each math box which for "show me what you know". List several ways you use this product in your classroom. Never assume that a buyer knows how, why, or when to use your product. Use the footer to put the copyright symbol, your name and date of creation on EVERY page. Items, especially free ones, have been "stolen" from TPT and posted on other sites to be sold. You have to protect all of your creations. Also, number your pages and save everything in a PDF format unless you want the buyer to revise it.

Great Ideas! We are just stuck on how to create those enticing cover pages that everyone seems to have. We have done much research and have not found any "how to" for creating the beautiful layout. I understand there are websites for graphic licenses and individual packages we can buy. We are pretty tech savvy and have found this portion frustrating. Our teaching style would be considered eclectic. It is like having an Ipod full of a range of music from classical to Rock to R&B. We pride ourselves for taking what works in traditional teaching and infusing it with the modern times. We hold high expectations for our students and believe that they are capable of achieving the high standards set by the Common Core if given the appropriate tools, resources and support.

All three of us hold a Masters in Education from New York State institutes.
