Stefanie F. re: Writing Workshop Binder and Starter Kit {117 pages}
Hello! Wanted to ask before purchasing: do I need this AND the interactive writer's notebook to successfully implement this? I am using interactive journals this year, but wasn't sure if a binder and a journal would be too much in second grade? Also, I will be doing departmentalized in second grade, only teaching ELAR. I will have 3 90 minute periods to teach reading, writing, phonics, and spelling. Is that enough time to implement a writer's workshop? I'm hoping so but would like your opinion. Thanks!

Hi Stefanie - GREAT question! These two resources work excellent together. This binder helps you set up and start to run a Writer's Workshop. There are ideas and printables. The Interactive Notebooks are a supplement to the binder once you are up and running. Given you have lots to teach in 3- 90 minute periods, I would suggest you only start with the binder and either teach your writing once in that 90 minute period or better yet integrate your reading, writing and language together throughout the 90 minute period. You will see ideas for how to do this in the binder using Author Studies. After you've been teaching it for a while, you may see that you'd like to use Interactive Writer's Notebooks and get them then. The other option is to buy the whole set as a bundle now which is the Ultimate Binder, Interactive Notebooks and, Ultimate Template Binder (at a discount) as that is for the whole year. Let me know if you have anymore questions. If you want to see the notebooks in use, check out my Writing Sundays posts at my blog: www.thewritestuffteaching.blogspot.ca Cheers, Shelley

I cam across this resource after looking at the ultimate writing template binder. I have been looking for a resource that can help me structure a writing programme throughout the year for my students. I was immediately drawn to the ultimate writing binder but after reading about this product I am not so sure which better suits my needs. My concern though is that I do not have the classroom space to set up the "office".

Hi Audain,

Great question! The Ultimate Writer's Workshop Binder will help you set up writer's workshop from the very beginning (set up, supplies etc) and gives you some great info and printables to help you teach it. There are dictionaries you can make, an author study pack and lots of writer's notebook lessons. This is a comprehensive "how to". I recommend it if you want to know how to set up and learn how to run a writer's workshop. The Ultimate Template Binder will supplement your current writing program. You do not need to set up an office at all. These are just folders for privacy that are filled with word lists and can be stored elsewhere and used as needed or you don't need to use them at all. The Interactive Writer's Notebooks complement both nicely. I hope that helps.

My blog is www.thewritestuffteaching.blogspot.ca Writer's Workshop is designed as a way to teach the writing process. The "end product" could be anything (book, story, poem, letter) or it could be nothing as students continuously write and revise. I work at an inner city school in a grade three. Would you suggest ordering the grade k-2 minds up curriculum or the older version. The kids lack social skills and rules in their lives.

Hi Terri,

I am not as familiar with the 3-5 as the training was very focussed and specific to what we taught. In looking at the index of the 3-5, it is the same as K-2. I think the difference being in the language or book suggestions and maybe some of the tasks. The K-2 is easily adaptable to your 3's and it will springboard you to thinking of new things to do with them. If they are inner city, chances are that they need the teaching of social skills not the re-teaching so this would be perfect. I also HIGHLY recommend SUPERFLEX program by Michelle Garcia Winner et al. It is very expensive but you may be able to borrow from your resource centre. I use these programs together and kids love it! Pop by my blog to read more. www.theperksofteachingprimary.blogspot.ca

Hi Kflemming,
Thank you for your question. It is a good one! Yes! I always consider trying to make my work as inclusive as possible but I can only work with the graphics available as I don't create my own. What Good Readers Do and Classroom Rules for Good Citizenship both have children of color as do my Center Posters but perhaps not as much as I would like. Most of my other products are done with animals or do not have people in them. I am very sensitive to the issue so thank you for raising it and I will definitely make that a priority when I create my new resources. :)

Hi! Just wondering...have you used this in a Grade One classroom? Is there any way to have a more detailed look at what the posters say? In the preview I can't quite make it out, and I'm not sure if the goals fall in line with the bc PLOs for Grade One.

Thanks,

Hi there Elizabeth!

I have been trying to upload a better view but the file size is too large. Rather than have you wait for me to figure it out, I'd love to send it to you. Many of the learning outcomes are the "big ideas" we want kids to learn and would most definitely fit into your grade 1 class but I can leave it up to you. Send me your email to youhavethewritestuff@gmail.com and I will happily send you the larger preview file. :)

Thanks for popping in and introducing yourself personally. Yes, I think we have lots in common. I only wish others could see how effective using this in your classroom is. I am always amazed how independent and caring they become. Class management is easier too! I am very proud of my Mindful Brains Mindful Hearts unit but it doesn't seem to be getting much response. Maybe we could pin each others stuff if you are on Pinterest ? I would love to keep in touch. If you are Google ( many TPT sellers are) come to the Elementary Education community board and post some of your stuff and we can maybe generate a little interest. I'm going to check your store out now!

Thanks for getting back to me. My focus of late has been writing; running writing workshops for teachers, interviewing authors for radio and developing my own writing. Finding suitable strategies for all ages is always useful and many 'junior' strategies can prompt 'senior' writers. The simplicity of tasks can often release the inner child.

That's so true David about adaptability and your inner child. The new one I am working on for K-6 is very much like "random acts of kindness" for high schoolers and developing a sense of self. My Christmas Writing Centers were very popular, partly because they were open ended and adaptable I guess. I really enjoy writing and a few of my products are poems and little books I've written but I also really enjoy providing in service to teachers on teaching writing. Pinterest may have what you are looking for.

Hi David,

Most of my products are suitable for younger students (grades 1-3) with modifications able between the grades. I have one for up to grade 4 (Betty Crocker) and am currently working on a Mind/Brain unit involving writing and social learning but that will be more for grades k-6. I see you are teaching mostly high school so most of my items would not be suitable. I hope to begin sharing not only elementary but middle schoolwriting products from other sellers on my Facebook page if you would like to "like" it, you are most welcome if you would find it useful. Best of luck!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am in my 23rd year of teaching and I love teaching! I have taught grades 1-6 but my heart is in primary. Teaching kids to write is my specialty!

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching style allows students to be independent learners. I try to give them the tools they will need to be successful. Learning is personal and each student requires different strategies and skills to succeed. I try to incorporate whole class, independent and collaborate (cooperative small group) instruction. I also use auditory, visual and kinesthetic methods so that each type of learner will be able to learn.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

20 year teaching award MEd. Curriculum and Instruction: Writing Development I've been asked to present on such topics as: The Write Traits Assessment in Literacy Using Technology in the Classroom Mind Up! (A Sharing Session on how Mindup has guided my teaching and created happier learners)

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I received my BEd. (elementary education) and my MEd. in Curriculum and Instruction (writing development). I have presented numerous workshops on topics such as The 6 Write Traits, Assessment Strategies, Social Learning and Happiness in School.
