I have been teaching for 14 years. During that time I have taught English, Creative Writing, and Reading. I have had a number of student teachers and have helped to design integrated projects with English, Biology, and PEALS (Physical Eduction and Life Styles).
Organization is a top priority. Students are given a weekly schedule of class activities, tests, assignments etc. I require students to keep an English binder with dividers for writing, literatue, projects, etc. In addition students are required to complete a weekly assignment sheet and grade chart. Creating a non threatening learning environment is also important. Playing learning games, giving coupons for various review activies, and rewarding students for staying in class and participating are just a few examples. Students have to want to come to your class, in order for you to be an effective teacher.
While acknowledgement from peers is rewarding, the best award is when a student returns to tell you they enjoyed your class and learned as well.
