Laura Bogush  (TpT Seller) re: Author's Purpose Activity Sheets
Hi Laurah J!

I'm a TpT seller and feel as if I "know" you through reading your forum posts. After seeing you featured on Tiny Toes' "Learn from" thread, I stopped by your store to browse around and pick up some tips. I'm trying to get a better handle on pricing for my own products.

Anyway, I took a look at your preview for your Author's Purpose Activity Sheets and I wondered if maybe you uploaded the actual product instead of the preview. The preview that I downloaded has no SAMPLE on the pages and it looks like the full product (9 pages) are here. Someone could just download and use the preview without paying.

I just wanted to let you know in case of a mix-up. It's so easy to happen when uploading - I know from personal experience!

I'm so happy for your success as a seller and hope to follow in your footsteps. Thank you for all that you do to help the rest of us in the forum.

I can only imagine that it is the version of powerpoint. I have a Mac OS X 10.8 and it is running Office 2010. I am able to open it with no issues as a read-only file in both Powerpoint and Keynote. I will try to see if I can export it to Quicktime and re-upload sometime today. Otherwise, you may wish to contact TpT Customer Support and put in a ticket with their tech folks who are very savvy.

Sorry about this, we will get it fixed.

Hi, Laurah -
I've been following the thread about protecting our work as JPGs, PDFs, etc. The thread is getting fairly long. I'm not only concerned, but confused about options.
I'm going to go out on a limb and ask if you would consider compiling the gist of the thread into one response. You seem to really know your stuff about this issue and I can see that others are confused, too. If you don't want to do this, please forgive my forwardness. I love your products and this is another tool that TpT teachers could really use. Thank you, Pat

Laurah - This is the first item I've ever purchased on TPT and it is fantastic! Nice work! My question: I'm trying to figure out what order to present the lessons. Other than obviously Intro first and Eval last, did you include something I missed that gives an overview of the order?
April 19, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Tools for Teachers by Laurah J
Hi Jeanette! Thanks so much! I am pleased that you are happy with your first TpT purchase! There is a folder inside the zipped folder that is labeled "Daily Lesson Plans". Inside are two files, one is labeled "Lesson Plans Week 1" and the other is labeled "Lesson Plans Week 2". Those should help you figure out the order that I teach the unit in. Of course, you can present it in another order if another way makes more sense to you. I hope that helps. Please feel free to contact me at tools4teachers.mrsj@gmail.com!

Thanks,

The "save as" would not work as it always does with other products. It would not let me click on it. I just saved it as a PDF file.
April 9, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Tools for Teachers by Laurah J
I think you're misunderstanding. There are several ways to do what you are asking about. Yes, from inside the program, the "save" feature does not work. However, when you download the zipped folder, your computer has to save it somewhere. Unless you have set a default, it usually asks where to save it. This is when you can choose where to save. Otherwise, it may go to a "downloads" folder by default. Another option is to open the location where you extracted the files, right click on the file, and then click "copy". Then you can go to the folder where you would like to save it and right click, then chose "paste".

Hi, as I responded on the ratings page, you can save the powerpoint very easily by simply following the directions in the product description: "When you download the file, instead of opening, click "save as", and save it to the location where you want it. Then, when you open, click "read only". You will be able to use the powerpoint normally, but will not be able to make edits." The product description also states that the powerpoint is read-only. I've been browsing your items having searched "WIDA" and Anchor Charts. It led me to you where I found your guide for writing MPIs. You refer to them as Multiple Performance Indicators and WIDA calls them Model Performance Indicators. Was that change intentional? If not, I thought you may want to be aware of that. I think your guide is a great way to guide a teacher through that process. It triggered some ideas in my thinking, as I train teachers in the WIDA standards in my school district. Thanks for your thoughtful work.

Hi Margaret,
Sorry for the long response- I have been camping with my family for the weekend, far away from civilization. I see what you mean and I will make the corrections and get them uploaded by COB today.

Thanks,
Laurah J.

UPDATE: Complete answer key uploaded. Thanks for your patience.

Hi, I am using your game in our classroom. I am confused on how to use it and play with my class. The timer is not working when I go to run it in slideshow on PowerPoint. Also, how would you group students for it? Thanks!

Hi,
Can you let me know what version of powerpoint you have? That will help me in diagnosing your problem. To use the timer, you put "1" in the little white box below the timer and click start. Make sure that when the powerpoint is opening and it asks if you want to enable macros, you say "yes". Also you need to have a working version of Flash on your computer. If the timer will not work, you can simply use a 1 minute timer.
I usually divide students into groups of 3 or four. Two from the team go up to the board. One student sits so he or she cannot see the words, and the other student should sit so she can see the words. Then the student who can see the words tries to get the first student to say those words without saying them themselves. So, if the word was "setting", the student who can see the words might say "where a story takes place. when a story takes place", etc. in an effort to get the student who cannot see the words to say "setting". Does that make sense? If they can get through all the words in the pyramid, then they can get the full value of that square.

Is there an answer key for the assessments? I'm loving your unit so far, but am looking to save a little time!

Thanks,

Hi Laurah! I was finally able to convert the videos to a wmv format so that they would play during the Power Point presentation. Thank you!

Charlotte,
I'm glad you were able to figure it out. I was trying, but without knowing the specifics of your machine, I was at a loss. Thanks for letting me know you figured it out! :D

Thanks!

I am not able to open your PowerPoint. I am using a Mac, and I saved the Zip file as you mentioned. In fact, that was the only option I was presented with. Once I saved the Zip file, I opened and extracted it to my desktop using my unzip software. When I click to open the PPT file, I get the same error message that others have mentioned. Please do what you can to make this right so that I will be able to access the materials I paid you for.

EDIT: Thank you for following up so quickly. I was able to use Quicktime to view the slides at home. Hopefully I will be able to use the actual PowerPoint on the PC in my classroom. You offer great material, but your processes are different from any I've run into on this site.

There is a quicktime version of the powerpoint included in the bundle for the Mac users due to this very issue. All you have to do is use the quicktime version- it is exactly the same as the powerpoint version but in a format that Mac users can run. I added this feature when others have had difficulty in the past to make it usable for everyone. You do have access to everything you paid for.

Thanks,
Laurah J.

I am new to Teachers Pay Teachers and should have read that first I admit. If it is any consolation at all I did go in before I received your email and edit it as soon as I read the part about the typo. Do I need to buy it again?

No, you do not need to repurchase. I made the correction and reuploaded it. You should have received a notification on your "my purchases" page. You can simply go to "my purchases" and redownload the corrected version.

Although I have your video files in the folder, my computer does not recognize the 3gpp extension as a file format. Can you send the videos to me in another format? Thank you!

Hi Charlotte,
I've been working all day to try and figure this out. The only thing I can think of is that maybe you are using a Mac? The videos are in the format most commonly used by Windows Media Player. I am trying to find a way to convert them, but to do that, I would need to know what kind of computer you're using and what kind of video file types you can run.

Thanks,
Laurah J.

I really loved your product of two nonfiction books. If possible, could you fix the typo on Phillipines and allow download once again? I absolutely think it is great, but would appreciate the fix before using. You have instructed that it is for one classroom. I plan to use it in the classroom but also for a tutoring group within the same school but different grade level. Do I need to purchase it twice?

Penny,
I appreciate you letting me know about the typo. However, I really wish you had contacted me BEFORE rating my product down. I would have been happy to fix it for you ASAP. I'm really disappointed by the rating, especially since on the rating page it says "And if there was a simple error in the product, for example, a typo or two or something of this nature, please Ask the Seller to fix it for you before leaving a bad rating!" I wish I had had the opportunity to correct this error before you rated my product down.
I will fix the typo and reupload the corrected version first thing tomorrow morning. You will receive a notification on your "My Purchases" page.

Thanks,
Laurah J.

As it states in the product description, "This powerpoint is read-only. When you download the file, instead of opening, click "save as", and save it to the location where you want it. Then, when you open, click "read only". You will be able to use the powerpoint normally, but will not be able to make edits. This is done to protect the integrity of the file." Due to the terms of use on fonts and graphics, I cannot provide a file that is any other way. Please simply click "read only".

Thanks,

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am currently an ESOL coach for my district, working with both ESOL and mainstream teachers to help them differentiate and improve the quality of their instruction for English language learners. I currently work in Maryland, but spent several years teaching in North Carolina, and I completed my student teaching in Tennessee as well. During my career, I have worked with students in grades K-8, though most of my attention has been focused on the upper grades, 4-8. I have been invited to Busan, S. Korea, twice to conduct 2 week teacher training seminars on Content Based English Instruction for English language learners, and I am SIOP trained. In addition, I also lead numerous Continuing Professional Development courses, workshops, and focus groups for teachers in my district. In addition to my MS, I also have a BA degree in Spanish and Mass Communications.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am very passionate about my job and my students. I spend hours at home planning lessons and creating materials to use in my classroom. Many of my materials were originally designed for use in the ESL classroom, however, they can easily be used or adapted for use in the mainstream classroom by students of every ability level.
My teaching style is very laid back. My students know that as long as they follow directions, we will have a great time in class!
I believe in catering to my students' multiple intelligences and providing an area where they are excited to come and learn.
In my ESOL class, I believe very highly in the value of reading and literacy, and work hard to impress it upon my students as well. As a result, we do many novel studies incorporating cross-curricular materials and concepts.
