smcelhinney re: Spelling Units for the Year
Is there a pre/post test included? How do you decide how to group the students for the lists? Has it been rigorus enough for the common core?

Hi! GREAT questions!! The pretest is included- I use the actual list and fold it in half. We talk about honesty and not looking at the words on the other side. I like to do it this way becasue then when they unfold the paper the words are in print right there and there's no questions from the parents as to what the words should be :) I do have a post-test paper I'd be happy to send you if there is not one in this set (there's 160 some pages and I can't remember right now if the post test made it in!!). We have been doing this EXACT pack this year and I have been VERY happy with it. We are not into the common core quite yet, however I have that mind set as it is coming. The challenge set of words are very approprite and I feel like the "regular" list is also very approporite. Here is a list of all the skills/sounds covered:
Short a/i, Short o/e, Short u,Short vowel review, TH, SH, CH, WH, St (blends), long a/e, long i/e, long o/e
long u/e, ay/ai, oa, ee/ea, y=e, y=i Plurals, old, doubling, ou/ow,ow= long o
oo-short, oo-long, ew, igh, aw/au,
r controlled, compound words, days of week, irregular plurals

Hope that helps!!
Thanks,
Tori

I am very sorry for that error! I am at school teaching right now without my file on hand (I usually have my flash drive with me and it is at home!). I know how frustrating that can be to have something you want to use with an error and I am truly SORRY! Sometimes no matter how hard I try to catch those little things I overlook them. I promise to upload a new updated file the minute I get home this evening. Please also see my comment back to your rating too.
Thanks so much for your purchase.

Thanks Tori for the info! I teach Envisions math, so I was wondering then... what about the paper work that is part of the lesson? Is that a center or do you give them time for that as well? I appreciate all of your help! :) Also, I am trying to look into my schedule more and see how I could possibly change some things around to make my math period longer.

Thanks!! Jenna

Another good question Jenna! Most of this is covered in this product... but any paper work I usually have the students do BEFORE they are able to choose their "games." I have my high guys working on something more challenging and my average guys are working on a follow up sheet from the lesson.

If you can find more time for math that would be GREAT! But like I said before, you can really do a version of this with any time limit as long as you have about 30 minutes. :)
Please let me know if you have more questions... keep them coming! :)

turquoise22 re: Math Daily 3 Complete Program Idea
Hi Tori!

I have been wanting to change my math program over the past couple years, but have been struggling with the short time I have already. I LOVE my reader's workshop time and would LOVE to have math similar. However, I am unsure how much time you have math each day? Also, do you teach the main focus for the week on Monday and then the centers are around that? Just curious! With the common core now I really feel I need to do something so they are meeting all concepts in a interactive way! If you could let me know how much time you allow and sort of a short summary of it, I would appreciate it! I am very interested! :)

Thanks so much!

Hi Jenna! GREAT question!! My district just bumped our math time up to 60 minutes a day and I'm excited that I have MORE time! Math is SO important and sometimes can get overlooked by reading/ELA. In the past I was working with about 35-45 minutes daily of math. However, I think you can make Math Daily 3 work with any time limit. Here's all you really need. I do a 8-10 minute focus lesson EVERY DAY (and honestly, I don't do D3 Math every single day either-- you need to do what works for your lesson/unit). After the focus lesson then we break up into groups that can last as long as you want... generally 15-20 minutes. Now you can stop there or if you have more time you can switch groups again. The nice thing about this is you have major flexibility. This just makes it easier to get to all your students on a more personal level while the other students are doing meaning ful activities!! I hope this helps a bit and PLEASE continue to ask questions if you have more!!! Thanks so much for your interest!

Hi! Included is a complete list of "word wall words" that match the spelling rule of the week. The words are designed to show the kids that many words have these particular sounds! The phonics skills that are covered each week are:

Short a/i, Short o/e, Short u,Short vowel review, TH, SH, CH, WH, St (blends), long a/e, long i/e, long o/e
long u/e, ay/ai, oa, ee/ea, y=e, y=i Plurals, old, doubling, ou/ow,ow= long o
oo-short, oo-long, ew, igh, aw/au,
r controlled, compound words, days of week, irregular plurals

I created this for a second grade classroom- but can be adapted for 1st or 3rd depending! If you are looking more for "sight words" or "high frequency words" (like dolch) I have that in a separate item in my store (not that I am trying to push another item on you!!). Please let me know if this answers your question or if you have any others!! Thanks for your interest! :) Tori

Hi! I think it is very important to have mixed problems, however, not for a timed test purpose. Children do need to learn how to switch gears and distinguish between addition and subtraction but that should not have a specific time limit. I have my math facts separately because I want the child to be able to focus on one fact at a time. I LOVE LOVE the way I do facts now :) Determining what specific fact the child should focus on has really improved my student's mastery of the facts!
Just an FYI... these packs have both been reduced by $2 (each!!) and will be on sale sun and monday!! :)

Do you write the morning message on the board or chart paper?
August 1, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
Tori's Teacher Tips
Tori's Teacher Tips  (TpT Seller)
Hi! Yes, I write the message on a "chart type" paper. I found that the really large paper was too costly and a waste of paper. At my school we had paper that was slightly larger than construction size paper. I put that paper on a board to make it sturdy and placed it on my easel. It seemed to work well. Now with all the technology (and I have a SMART board) I'm thinking of creating a smart version of this- how fun would that be! You can just load the word document you purchased onto your white board (via projector) or into Smart notebook and do it that way! :) Hope this helps!

I was wondering if you have cafe lessons for the other strategies: fluency,accuracy....etc

Also, what does this download include? Are there words to put up on the bulletin board?

Hi! I have so many ideas for all the cafe strategies, I just don't have them "sellable" yet. I would be happy to get anything that you are particularly interested in ready for you. What grade do you teach? What would you start with?

This lesson is SO fun! I do it as a part of cafe and work on writing for daily 5. It does have a large group of words included and the steps needed to create the bulletin board!

Please let me know what you are looking for and I can help! :)

Scipi  (TpT Seller) re: Writing/Math Independent Task Cards
I saw your posting on the Sellers Forum page of Teachers Pay Teachers; so, I thought I would look at your freebie as well as your blog..

Here are a few suggestions that might help you to better market your products. First, add a second page which is a directions or suggestions page. (Is this a center activity? Do the children do all of the cards? Etc.) List several ways you use this product in your classroom. Never assume that a buyer knows how, why, or when to use your product. You could make the second page a Table of Contents.

Use the footer to put the copyright symbol, your name and date of creation on EVERY page. Items, especially free ones, have been "stolen" from TPT and posted on other sites to be sold. You have to protect all of your creations. Also, number your pages.

If you have time, I’d love to see what you think of my freebies listed below.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Map-Test-for-the-Primary-Grades

If you would prefer a math freebie, I have several at my store you can download.

Welcome to TPT, and good luck with selling!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

This is my 13th year teaching. Wow, where did the time go? I have taught 7 years in first grade and I am currently on my 6th year in second grade. Which do I like better you ask? I have reasons to love them both! I think first grade made me the teacher I am today. My heart is in second though. I am lucky to work in a wonderful school with wonderful students!
