My kids really had a good time with this. We chose Family Guy to discuss European Explorers. The kids had fun, great thinking and connections happened, and the kids did well on the test. They also asked to do this assignment again, so another plus. Thank You!

I teach a project based learning class. In this class, the students have to work together and I am more of a facilitator. I had been struggling in ways give constructive feedback to help students grow in their discussions with one another. I teach 7th and 8th grade and can use these because the same Common Core standards are there for middle school as high school, give or take a few standards. I cannot be happier with this bundle package. It is truly impressive and the students will grow in these areas. Thank you!

I'm sorry you aren't satisfied, chelcolt. However, as someone who has been teaching the CCSS for two years, I have to differ with your assessment. Writing poetry in different forms is an excellent way to practice higher-level language skills, as outlined in both the preview and the full download. Also, I included every genre in the product description, so I wonder why you purchased this knowing what was included ahead of time? Alas, you can take out a ticket for a refund if you feel this purchase is not at all useful in your classroom. Thank you for your feedback.

This is such a great idea! I have a feeling that my kids, and parents too, just "sign" the form that they've read the handbook without really reading it! This will get at least the students exposure and they cannot claim they had "no idea" I'll have to adapt to fit our handbook, which is always expected, but it is a great start and awesome activity for back to school! Hi Anna - I use our online grading software and print out a blank roster that I use, then enter those grades in that way. You could probably just create one using a blank table. I use almost exclusively Kimberly Geswein's fonts (KG fonts). You can find them here on TpT. Depending on which graphic organizers you are referring to, here are the fonts I used: Reading for 6-12 is "Just Realize" and "KG Seven Sixteen" with Times New Roman & Arial; Grades 6-12 Vocab organizers is "Swagger Bold," "KG Always a Good Time," and "KG Turning Tables"; on the 2-5 vocab organizers I used "KG Turning Tables" and "Love Ya Like a Sister." Hi, I saw an image that was copywrited to you: a scene with an owl in the lower left corner, a snail in the lower right, a sun and cloud in the upper right and a cute border around the whole thing. It says "My School Year Poem." I want something similar to this and bought two packages, the owl blackline package and the one with all the owl cliparts and borders, thinking this would give me what I need to create the image I'm looking for. However, the borders in the big package are all full color, not blackline and there is nothing even close to what I'm looking for. The owls in the blackline package are perfect, but I need a whole scene, not just the owl. (I'm trying to create a cover for a journal.) Can you advise me on how I can get something like I saw??

Hi Jennifer - A compressed zip file means that the download contains a folder with multiple files inside. If you have a Mac, you just need to double-click on the file and it will automatically make a copy of those files (unzipped) for you in your downloads folder. If you have a PC, you will need to download software (which is free--don't ever pay for it or click on links that make you pay!) in order to get the files out. There are instructions in your "My Purchases" tab for this process, as well. This particular file contains 30 files, however many of them are just lightly different from each other (for example, each of the frames comes with one with a white or colored middle and one file with a transparent or cut-out center). So basically, there are about 5 different frames in the polka dot colors and three different backgrounds in the polka dot colors. I hope that helps! I didn't realize I didn't have a preview for this. Hi Opal - There are a number of ways you could do it. If you wanted to have one bracket for the class, you could have students compose arguments as to why a certain character/historical figure is stronger, then have the class vote. Or you could have each individual fill out their own bracket based on their opinions/arguments. I offered it as an enrichment exercise and the students who participated had some pretty funny (but mostly logical) choices. Not everyone agreed on individual choices, but that was OK. It was fun and it made them think differently, make comparisons, and communicate with one another intelligently (or somewhat intelligently). :) Hope that helps & thanks for your interest!

I LOVE all of your amazing clip art and frames! I am currently a first year teacher and would really love some advice on how to create frames and schedule time throughout my day to make all of these creative materials. How many hours a week would you say you spend working on your blog and materials? I would really love it if you could help me get started with some do's and dont's as far as creating a blog and making frames.

Hi Katy - Thanks so much for your kind words! I do all my writing & creating at night and weekends because I am far too busy during the school day. Also, summertime is when I create the most. I am lucky if I post one article a week on my blog and create one product a month. It's too time consuming. I have a degree in journalism, so I learned most of my skills through my schooling and time spent advising school yearbook and newspaper. It took me years to learn and I'm still learning from my students. They are usually the ones who keep me up to date on how to do things in different apps. Good luck! -Tracee

I have bought products from you as well as my school has bought me some of your guides just recently including the complete teacher's guide of the hunger games trilogy. As recent as this past Thursday I lost the jump drive and I am planning on buying it again, but the problem I am confronting is that for tomorrow I have to hand in my finals and all the material to be used was in that precious jump drive! I have searched all over my classroom and home and it does not seem to appear. I just thought that maybe you could send me through my email (dramosberrios@yahoo.com) or my dropbox (profdramos@yahoo.com) the guides of Catching Fire and Mockingjay since if I re-buy the drive, it won't be here for tomorrow. You can share the student copy with your students on a secure server. I use our district's grading software to share files (I use the attachment feature when I create an assignment) because it is password-protected and the files are not picked up by search engines (many password-protected sites still allow search engines to find them). Hi jrobin201, All of the CCSS writing standards from grades 6-12 divide the writing into three types: argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative. This is for the argument and informative/explanatory types of writing only. Because each grade level follows the same formula for writing, the "introduce claims/topics, develop/support claims/topics, use words to create cohesion/links, and provide concluding statement" are virtually identical. In fact, I could probably add an "S" to make it "PEELS" and include the "establish and maintain an appropriate style." See page 2 of the download to see how each fits with each letter. The example is for W.8.1., but applies for the first two writing standards in grades 6-12. Actually, it applies to grades 4 and 5, as well. They follow pretty much the exact formula. Hi Lindsay - I'm sorry you are having problems opening it. Is this after you've extracted the files in the zipped folder? Have you tried opening the Microsoft Word files? I suggest redownloading and when you try to open the individual files within the folders, make sure you are using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader (the link is in your "my purchases" to download free). I hope that helps. If you continue to have problems, the tech dept. is very good about helping with specific things. You can take out a ticket in the "Contact Us" link. -Tracee

I also like that you target higher grades, which will appeal to our upper levels on the forums. I'm wondering how you go about making such wonderful PDF's. Do you just create them using word and save as a PDF, or do you use special software? I'm also interested in starting a blog and class website. Any advice or sites that you could give me would be fantastic. Just looking for some guidance in this new venture. Thanks a bunch!

Hi Jennifer - Thanks so much for your kind words! I use Mac's Pages to design about 90% of my resources (the other 10% I use Adobe InDesign). I just export it it as a PDF or Word document from either program. I recommend using Blogger for blogging because it's pretty easy to get started and is what a majority of the teacher bloggers use. TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching at my current public high school for twelve years, and have a total of 16 years experience. Most of my experience is teaching high school English and journalism classes; however, for several years I taught an art history class. I teach all levels--from honors students to special education students; therefore, I'm constantly modifying my assignments to fit my students' needs.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I will never stop trying to foster creativity and critical thinking in my classroom no matter how many practice standardized tests I must give. In my opinion, it is just as (if not more) important to graduate students who can think independently and creatively as it is to graduate students who can score well on a two-day test in three subject areas.
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
My students' achievements are more meaningful than the honors bestowed upon me. Their achievements are my true rewards.
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
I graduated from St. Ambrose University in 1994, double-majoring in English and Mass Communications & Journalism. After teaching in a small school in a special education classroom, I decided to go back to school to earn my teaching endorsement. My roles in education have included being a librarian, middle school English & reading, middle school special ed., and for the past twelve years as a high school English and journalism teacher with about six years of art history thrown in there, as well.
ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Learning can not be assessed by a single test; it is determined by an individual's ability to think critically, creatively, and solve problems. Teaching to the test will produce great test-takers. Which is fine, if that's all they'll do the rest of their lives. Teach them how to question, force them to look at things differently, and foster their creativity; these are the skills we should be practicing to produce great thinkers.
