Angela Johnson  (TpT Seller) re: End of the Year Activity and Memory Book for Teens
Hello! I was just wondering if this an activity that students complete on a computer? I don't have very much access to technology, so that is why I was wondering.

Thanks!

Hi Angela - It's an option for those with access, but I included two formats so you can just print out the activities (pages) that you want your students to complete rather than have them do it on a computer. Thanks for your interest! -Tracee

Thanks so much, isha8451! I have not created anything specific for Candor (I'll have to read it this summer!), but I have a few products that work with any novel. Some are more academically rigorous (Common Core reading & language graphic organizers) and others are more creative (Creative activities for any novel, character cell phone activity, character trading cards, etc.). I'll be coming out with more Common Core-specific products that will work with any novel in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for your interest & have a great summer! -Tracee

Hey Tracy,

I LOVE all of your amazing clip art and frames! I am currently a first year teacher and would really love some advice on how to create frames and schedule time throughout my day to make all of these creative materials. How many hours a week would you say you spend working on your blog and materials? I would really love it if you could help me get started with some do's and dont's as far as creating a blog and making frames.

Thank you so much and I am very much looking forward to hearing back from you!

Best,

Hi Katy - Thanks so much for your kind words! I do all my writing & creating at night and weekends because I am far too busy during the school day. Also, summertime is when I create the most. I am lucky if I post one article a week on my blog and create one product a month. It's too time consuming. I have a degree in journalism, so I learned most of my skills through my schooling and time spent advising school yearbook and newspaper. It took me years to learn and I'm still learning from my students. They are usually the ones who keep me up to date on how to do things in different apps. Good luck! -Tracee

Tracee, hi
My name is Diana Ramos and I currently teach at Colegio Marista in PR. I am writing to see if you could help me out. I have bought products from you as well as my school has bought me some of your guides just recently including the complete teacher's guide of the hunger games trilogy. As recent as this past Thursday I lost the jump drive and I am planning on buying it again, but the problem I am confronting is that for tomorrow I have to hand in my finals and all the material to be used was in that precious jump drive! I have searched all over my classroom and home and it does not seem to appear. I just thought that maybe you could send me through my email (dramosberrios@yahoo.com) or my dropbox (profdramos@yahoo.com) the guides of Catching Fire and Mockingjay since if I re-buy the drive, it won't be here for tomorrow. I am so desperate regarding this due date that I don't know what else to do! I would appreciate if you could help me out. I promise that I will buy the flash drive again since it has precious material to me, but I need this as for tomorrow. Could you please help me out? Any help on this matter will be thoroughly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can share the student copy with your students on a secure server. I use our district's grading software to share files (I use the attachment feature when I create an assignment) because it is password-protected and the files are not picked up by search engines (many password-protected sites still allow search engines to find them). I hope that answers your question and thank you for your interest! -Tracee

Tracee Orman  (TpT Seller)
Hi jrobin201, All of the CCSS writing standards from grades 6-12 divide the writing into three types: argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative. This is for the argument and informative/explanatory types of writing only. Because each grade level follows the same formula for writing, the "introduce claims/topics, develop/support claims/topics, use words to create cohesion/links, and provide concluding statement" are virtually identical. In fact, I could probably add an "S" to make it "PEELS" and include the "establish and maintain an appropriate style." See page 2 of the download to see how each fits with each letter. The example is for W.8.1., but applies for the first two writing standards in grades 6-12. Actually, it applies to grades 4 and 5, as well. They follow pretty much the exact formula. I have a link to the standards on page 2 for further help. -Tracee

Hi Lindsay - I'm sorry you are having problems opening it. Is this after you've extracted the files in the zipped folder? Have you tried opening the Microsoft Word files? I suggest redownloading and when you try to open the individual files within the folders, make sure you are using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader (the link is in your "my purchases" to download free). I hope that helps. If you continue to have problems, the tech dept. is very good about helping with specific things. You can take out a ticket in the "Contact Us" link. -Tracee

We use Pearson-Prentice Hall's Literature books, but I really only use a couple poems from there. As far as needing more, it depends on how much time you want to spend on the unit. Some of the poems and songs may not be appropriate for 7th grade, but the figurative language and writing exercises should be good. So you may be limited with having enough to read, though.

Hi Brittany - I use most of the resources to supplement the unit from our textbook. The "Teachers_PoetryUnitOutline.pdf" file gives the order in which I use them and breaks them down by purpose. I start with going over the terms & using song lyrics and ending with analysis of more difficult poems. To conclude the unit, they create their own original poetry books. For those who are hesitant to write, I give many formula poems that make it much easier. If you start them out with easy things, they become more confident and poetry isn't as daunting. Just have fun and I am sure they will, too. :) Good luck! -Tracee

I know you are a busy lady. Wanted to ask you a quick question about PNG and JPG. My email is: aperfectlypoeticpage@gmail.com

I'm branching out and doing more graphics at the moment. 300 DPI PNG images are huge file-wise. What's your opinion on doing 300 DPI JPG?? Would it be almost as good? I'd like to post more of my creations here but I can't seem to get some of the files under the size limits.

If you are too busy, that's okay. Answer here or at my email.

Thanks so much from one TPTer to another.

Tracee Orman  (TpT Seller)
Hi Tracy - I usually only save jpgs for use in thumbnails (not to sell) because the quality is not as good and it diminishes over time, no matter how high you save it. But you can set your resolution for pngs lower as long as the image itself is the largest you would want it. For example, if I want to make an 8.5x11 background, as long as I make it that size (or larger) so it does not have to be enlarged, you can get by with setting the resolution at 250 or 150, and even 72, in some cases. When I create in Photoshop, my beginning canvas is pretty big. It's much easier to size it down after it's done. Plus, flattening the image helps reduce the size, too, without losing quality. There are probably many tutorials online. But there are times when I have to make my packages smaller because of the size, too. ;) Hope that helps! -Tracee

Hi IngeniousTeacher - Thank you! I started selling in 2009 and made sure I posted links to TpT on every website, forum, and social network possible. If people can't find your resources, they can't buy them. That was the number one thing I did initially. A year later I started blogging, and that has really helped, too. It's harder for high school teachers because we don't spend as much time reading/following blogs in our spare time, but if we need something and do a search for it and Google directs us to a blog post that has a link to a product that would help us, then we're more likely to buy it. So build a blog that has content teachers would find useful. And Pinterest has been great these last couple of years. I don't pin just products, though. I pin lots of other things and re-pin things I like, which helps build a following. Good luck & hope that helps! -Tracee

Hi Amy - They are offered in both white and transparent (besides the outline). Most are just black lines, but some have a yellow highlighter and a few are in rainbow. You could change the color of them if you have photo editing software (like Photoshop or Paint), but when you place them into your word processing document, you really won't be able to edit the color much. They are all image files. You can check out some of my products where I have used them:

Loving your Poetry Digital Unit. I am the only LA/English teacher in a rural school for Grades 7-12, so always feel behind the eight ball and not as organized as I'd like to be. I used The Fireworks activity and would like to use more of your Lyrics activities (One, The River, etc.) but I cannot find the key in all the files? It's probably right in front of me and I'm just not seeing it. Thank you for direction on where I can find it in the packet. Smiles & thanks, Amanda

Hi, Amanda - Thanks so much for your purchase--I really need to add a table of contents! :) If you are referring to the "AdditionalLyrics" file, many of the keys are in the SongLyricsPoetryNew file (the key for "One" is on page 12). However, some of the songs I do not have a typed key (just my handwritten notes). For "The River", the sample section is in the FigurativeLanguageUpdated.ppt file ...toward the end of it, I think. I hope that helps! -Tracee

Tracee,
I purchased the hard copy of your TKAM unit a while back. I am just introducing the novel now, and plan on beginning to use your materials very soon. I have the CD at school, and I haven't looked at it since I bought it-are these exams on it? I love the idea of one that follows the movie. Let me know! Thank you so much!

Yes, they are, Megan! :) They may be all combined in one file. Let me know if you have problems finding them! I know there's a lot of stuff on there.

In HGvocab.pdf there are no answers for the vocab worksheet on page 27 of that file. Where can I find the answer key for that? It's a vocab matching page, the first question is forgetfulness; complete disregard.

Hi AMidnightRose - Sorry about that. The answers are on page 29, but it says, "Answers to worksheet on page 26" and is labeled "Answer Key #1". I added a new cover page to the file and forgot to change that page to "Answers to worksheet on page 27" instead. Sorry for the confusion! -Tracee

Hi Sanderson9988 - I just downloaded to make sure the files were not damaged. I opened them in both Preview and Photoshop, both worked fine. If you are placing them in Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, maybe the settings in your application aren't working? These are not placed in an application--they will have to be placed in or opened in one first in order to edit or add text. Here's a free tutorial if you use Word: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/How-To-Use-Frames-Text-in-Microsoft-Word
Hope that helps! -Tracee

Those are on the CD or can be purchased separately. There was only so much I could fit in the digital download. If you look at the product description, it has a list of all of the materials included. Also, the Teacher's Guide to the Survival Pack has a page that lists the names of the individual files if you have trouble finding them.

Thanks!

Hi Wanda - The quizzes and tests are provided in Microsoft Word if you need to make changes. You can open one of those documents rather than the PDF versions. Thanks. -Tracee

Hi Tracee. From the many to choose from, I thought your Hunger Games Unit looked to most interesting. I was right - I love the layout and the activities are extremely creative! However, I'm a little overwhelmed by the volume of resources. Can you recommend a starting point or is there something to indicate the teaching order. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Kind regards, Karen

Hi Karen - I've been teaching it for four years, so I add to it each time. You won't use everything, but can switch things up or differentiate each time you teach. In the Teacher's folder you will find an "Order of Lessons" (HGorderoflessons) document that should be helpful. Start with that and the student Survival Guide (HGsurvivalpack) in the "Activities" folder. The survival guide has many of the other files incorporated into it. Good luck & thanks for choosing my unit! Let me know if you have any additional questions. -Tracee

Hi! How did you get permission to use the photos in your unit? I would love to include some in my various units.

Thanks :)

Hi skitles - I can't tell if you are asking to use the same images I included in my unit. If so, they are not for commercial distribution. (Please read the terms!) But if you are asking how to get permission to use images in general, here is how I did it (this took well over 3 years and I am still securing permissions for others--I had to wait a year to post one of my products to get all permissions, so this isn't something that happens overnight): I asked the rights-holders (whether it was the photographer, artist, production company, webmaster, etc.). Often the person who holds the rights is not necessarily the person who created it. Many of the images I have the exclusive rights to use. In some of the cases I have agreements where I promote for them in return. Some of the promos include publish their press releases, write articles, and post links on my website back to them. You will want to have a website that generates a lot of traffic, otherwise they may not even consider it. (Probably 20,000-30,000 hits per month is minimum.) You can also just buy the commercial license in some cases. It depends on how much you want to spend.

'm sorry you are having problems with the download, jstofan. Did you try redownloading it? It is a zipped folder and the contents will need to be extracted. There could have been a glitch during download or loss of internet service. Please retry and use the trouble-shooting tips on the "My Purchases" page for additional help. Also, you can use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom to report technical difficulties to the tech team. They will be able to assist you further. Thank you. -Tracee

Thanks for your interest, Created. Before I posted the lesson I inquired on their official site whether their lyrics were public domain. (I'm not selling the songs, which would include the sheet music with the lyrics; what I sell are the activities--questions and answers with links to their official site.) Some artists will release their lyrics (not the sheet music) and others won't. You have to check on their official websites.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching at my current public high school for twelve years, and have a total of 16 years experience. Most of my experience is teaching high school English and journalism classes; however, for several years I taught an art history class. I teach all levels--from honors students to special education students; therefore, I'm constantly modifying my assignments to fit my students' needs.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I will never stop trying to foster creativity and critical thinking in my classroom no matter how many practice standardized tests I must give. In my opinion, it is just as (if not more) important to graduate students who can think independently and creatively as it is to graduate students who can score well on a two-day test in three subject areas.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

My students' achievements are more meaningful than the honors bestowed upon me. Their achievements are my true rewards.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I graduated from St. Ambrose University in 1994, double-majoring in English and Mass Communications & Journalism. After teaching in a small school in a special education classroom, I decided to go back to school to earn my teaching endorsement. My roles in education have included being a librarian, middle school English & reading, middle school special ed., and for the past twelve years as a high school English and journalism teacher with about six years of art history thrown in there, as well.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Learning can not be assessed by a single test; it is determined by an individual's ability to think critically, creatively, and solve problems. Teaching to the test will produce great test-takers. Which is fine, if that's all they'll do the rest of their lives. Teach them how to question, force them to look at things differently, and foster their creativity; these are the skills we should be practicing to produce great thinkers.
