Hi Jennifer,

I don't have an African American astronaut label, but I do have an African American astronaut in a rocket ship on the weekly folder sheet and the behavior management system. I might be able to add one to the packet, if you would like.

Anna re: Reading Units Across the Year (Units 1-5) Common Core Aligned
Hi. I am very interested in purchasing these units, but I have a few questions. I know I asked a question somewhere on your board, but I cannot find the question, so I don't know if you answered.

1) Do you ever chart the texts to make them a shared reading experience? Do you make copies for the students to have a piece of the selection so they can follow along? Do you include in your lesson plans which page of the read aloud book you make a copy of for the students?

2) Do you use these units in addition to your basal readers? My school is using Common Core Coach, but I would like to include more rich units (like yours) while still using the coach.

3) Do your units need to be presented in order?

Hi Anna,

I responded on June 27th. Here was my response:
Hi Anna,
I make my reading units have a "Shared Reading" component by allowing my students all to have access to the text. I do this in several different ways. I project the text with an Elmo and and projector, I have the text on iPads, or I make copies of excerpts of the text (which you are allowed to do within Copyright Laws if you are using it for educational purposes and it is not the entire book). You don't need the entire book when you are going back and looking closer at text. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need anything else.

You can also email me at tdralus@gmail.com

Here is my new answer:
1. I think I addressed this except for the part about the pages you should copy. I think I was inconsistent on this. I know I did it when I thought it was important to have those particular pages, but when I was teaching the units myself I added some based on my own judgement. I can look into adding the specific pages.

2. I use this instead of our basal. I am not a huge fan of the basal. This year we have a new series and new curriculum people. (Our district has been a bit of a mess.) I am very unhappy with the approach this new series takes. I feel it has misunderstood the direction of Common Core. The basal switches back and forth between informational text and literature. I feel this doesn't allow for deeper understanding and building upon a genre, topic, or theme. That doesn't make sense to me. I may incorporate some of the stories- if I absolutely have to do so. But I believe that a study is more effective.

3. No my units don't have to be in order. Actually, I used to teach the fairytale unit around October to allow the kids to dress like characters for Halloween. I just moved it because of the maps in our district. I don't like it at the end of the year. It is so intense. I think it is better in the middle. So I will probably do the order differently this year.

I hope this helped. Also, I hope you get this answer. :) I am happy to answer any other questions you have. Good luck to you this year, Anna!

How do you make your reading units have a "shared reading" component. At my school, we are required to have charted texts-- do you ever chart a portion of the picture books and really dive deep into that portion?

Hi Trina, I had questions about the fairy tales & fables unit AND the character study reading unit...
First, are they both the same structure, teach the same skills, just different themes? As in I wouldn't use both right? Just one or the other?

Second i just want to make sure, does it come with lesson plans AND assessments for each of the strategies listed that it covers?

I have just gotton quite a few units and a lot of them seem to be the same, mostly just filled with templates and organizers, but I just found your store and I really like your stuff, I like how these units look to!

Trina R Dralus
Trina R Dralus  (TpT Seller)
Hi Lilly,

Actually, no it isn't the same unit with different themes. The first unit is an introduction to reading workshop as well as a beginning look at Common Core Standards. The thinking builds within this unit. The text complexity increases in the first unit. The Fairy Tale unit is even more intense, as fables and folktales are by far a more complex text in and of themselves. Some standards are touch on again, but in a different way most of the time. There are added standards to the Fairy Tale unit as well. They are both meant to be covered in a years time.

Yes, there are lesson plans and assessments in both. There may be one or two of the same assessments, yet this was intentional. My goal was to see a higher level of performance and understanding as the children grow in their thinking and ability.

I think the two are quite different. If you choose to purchase both, let me know if you aren't satisfied. My email is tdralus@gmail.com. Good luck Lilly. This type of thinking is difficult, yet I was happily surprised by what my children were able to do. It really is amazing.

Hi Marni! I think if you stuck to the easier mysteries like Nate the Great and some of the Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew books it might work for you. Mysteries are great for inferring and deeper thinking, but this can be difficult for some kids. However, with lots of modeling and a fresh look at a genre most kids skip over it can be so meaningful and fun! Best of luck to you! Let me know how it goes. I am hoping to add more this summer. :)

Hi Carolyn,

I do think it would work for you. The first activity would be too young, but the meat of the unit is based in research with a focus on plants and animals in the habitat. When you have your kids search for information, use Kidrex.com (kid friendly google search engine). This should get them to info. you can use and trust. If you buy it and are unhappy, let me know and I'll make it up to you. Email me if you have any questions or concerns. Tdralus@gmail.com t

Kathleen D. re: Language Bundled Set of Task Cards 2.L.1.a-f.
Hi Trina,
I purchased your language bundle for second grade. The task cards were just what I needed!!! I love that they are self-checking! However, I wanted to bring something to your attention. Many of the Irregular Past Tense Verb task cards do not have past tense verbs - they are past participles. CCSS states "Form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs (e.g., sat, hid, told)" For example, the past tense of sing is sang. (# 12 should read: The first grade class sang that song before.) You can check out this website for the specifics. http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/verb-tenses_sys-tenses-irregular-verbs.htm
I looked over the task cards and found #s 1 - 6, 10-13, 15, 16, 19, 23, 26 & 28 to be incorrect. Is there anyway that these could be corrected? Also, is there anyway on the recording sheet that you can add the words adjective and adverb in each box so that the students have to circle which they found and then write the word in the box? Finally, the task recording sheets for the reflexive pronouns, verbs, the adjective and adverb cards & the sentence cards are all titled "Collective Nouns." Thanks so much!! Kathy Downs

I do not have one for first grade. Sorry! I do think some of this would work for first graders. The first unit for instance. However, I think there is a lot of it that would be very complex. About 80% of it could be used with different titles to make the complexity a little less for first graders, but there are a few things that are text specific. I would not recommend this to struggling first graders. I hope that answers your question. Have a great week!

I was just looking at your Reading Units for the year. Did you buy books within each unit for the whole class, small groups, or was it more related to listening comprehension by you reading a book aloud? I did buy all the books that I reference in the unit. I made excerpts for the students (that is not included due to copyright- you can make copies of parts of a book for educational reasons but not for profit). I also used internet resources; which I include the links. This made it much easier to share the text. I also have some of the books on my iPads (I know not everyone has that in their classroom). I do read aloud, but I always use the text as a shared reading or an interactive read aloud. If I don't have multiple copies, I display it on the projector. Hope that helps!

These cards are half pages. You might be able to enlarge on a printer, but I haven't tried that. Sorry!

Hi Trina,
I have purchased 4 of your Common Core Units of Study. I love them as much as my students do. I cannot find Unit 4 though. Can you tell me what it is called?
Thank you,
Marni

That is one in the works. I am working on an informational text unit for number four. I will try to pick up the pace. Wow! I can't believe you have so many. Thank you so much! I am so thrilled to hear your kids like them. If you want to email me your email address, I'll let you know when it is done. Tdralus@gmail.com. Thanks again!

You should be able to save it to your desktop. Go to file, save, desktop , and it should save.

I love your products, but wish they had page numbers. I have them in a binder, but if I take out a page to post the essential questions, it's hard to put it back unless I mark the place it came from. I usually forget to do this.

It does, Shani, but it is easy to skip if you don't need it that way. The ELA CC standards are at the top of the page. Check out the sample lesson at http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Common-Core-Point-of-View-ELA-Standard-6-Sample-Lesson-With-Anchor-Charts-735159 to see if you like it. My sample lesson is free.

I'm searching for a number line to put up in my beach themed classroom. I'd like it to go to at least 120 and begin with 0 or -10.

Are the surf boards with numbers a number line? If so, how high do the numbers go?

I'm so sorry, but it has been removed. My partner (Math Mojo) has one, but it is for intermediate teachers. There were too many similarities and a buyer was unhappy. So I removed mine. Email me at tdralus@gmail.com, and I will just send it to you. I need to make some changes to it so that it can be placed back up. But I will give it to you since it is no longer here.

Are any of the Open House and Parent welcome sheets editable?
I am in China and I may need to adjust some things. . . .
Just read some of the other questions. Not editable, but how is that going?
Thanks,
Kerstin

Can I ask where you got the clip art of the hiker? I am looking for a fisherman that I can put the kids' names on for a display for my classroom. Any ideas where I could look?

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I love teaching and learning! Sharing ideas and learning from others is one of my very favorite things to do. I love the connections you make on TpT. This is a wonderful place to grow together!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in project based learning and learning by doing. I also believe in setting high expectations and believing that my students can reach these goals. I also believe that each child is smart in a multitude of ways, and it is my job to find the best way for each chid to show what they know. I also feel that children should be stretched in all areas of intelligence so that they can grow as a person and as a learner.
