Good Evening. I begin the unit by discussing students' personal holiday traditions. I usually have students who celebrate Christmas and/or Hanukkah. In the past I have given the students reading articles about each holiday. Now I have the students view the presentation on Scholastic.com called "Celebrate the Winter Holidays." After viewing the presentations, I then have the students complete the Venn Diagram. During our class discussion, if it isn't mentioned by the students (usually it is), I talk about how all three holidays have lights in common. The students then use their Venn diagram to write essays about how lights are an important feature of one of their chosen holidays. I hope this helps. Trista

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I am entering my nineteenth year as a teacher in Westfield, New Jersey. During this time I have taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. This year I will be teaching 3rd grade (looping with 14 of my second graders from last year). My goal has been to encourage my students to become independent and creative thinkers. I am always humbled by what my students remember and the projects that have made an impact on their learning.
