My students enjoyed the activities. There was an error on the comprehension question #6 regarding the page number to read. It said "Read p. 233-235," it should say 326-327 instead. Other than that it was great!

For every story there are "selection vocabulary" words that can be found in the TE usually on the vocab. background page. For example in the story Winners Never Quit you can find vocab. words in the TE on p.411 (the page with vocab. in background).

I included homophones in this packet because it is a spiral review skill included with this story (I don't have the TE handy right now, but there are pages about homophones). I included it (and think the te mentions it) to link the previously learned skill of homophones/using the context clues in the sentences to figure out what homophone is being talked about to the vocab. skill with this story, using context clues.I do plan on going back and adding some activities during the summer to some of the stories.

I think there is a mistake on the sorting game for oo, ou, and ew sounds. It looks like there is two cards for oo and none for ou. Also on one of the comprehension questions hid needs to be changed to hide. If you have already corrected this sorry to have bothered you. I love your work!!

Happy Monday!! I think using the If I Can Spell...sheets are most effective if you use it during whole group/small group instruction (not indep. work). The purpose it to reinforce the sound-spelling correspondance. So what I basically do is talk a little bit about our weekly phonics skill and relate that knowledge to the If I Can Spell... For example if the skill is long a the activity sheet may have -ate, -ake, and -ale at the top of page. I would start at the -ate column and sound it out for the students and have them sound out -ate. I then would say if I remember that a-t-e makes the ate sound I can use that knowledge to spell date. (I then model sounding out date and talk about adding the letter d for the /d/ sound). Next I would say, If I can spell date I can spell mate, the beginning sound just changes from /d/ to /m/ and so on and so forth. I ususally will do the whole column with my students except for the last 2-3 boxes (they come up with words on their own). For the brainstorming word map I let them choose a word family, and they simply fill in the outside circel with all the words they can think of that have that word family in them.

I haven't considered just bundling the vocab. sheets together (but thanks for the idea). Work is very busy now (ha!! isn't it always?), and I am trying to finish up Second Grade Unit 6 and a few other items I am making, so if I did it wouldn't be until summer vacation.

I love these products. However, I have a problem when printing. Everything prints as expected except the numbered lines where the students should write sentences (for example, after they have sorted adjectives or ir, er,ur words). The area where there should be lines is blank. I've tried printing in color and grayscale, no luck! Any suggestions?

Thank you for the compliment. I have no idea why the lines are not printing (I have not had any issues with printing the pages with the lines) as it is a pdf document. Is your printer on a stable, flat surface? I know sometimes that can effect what/how it is printed. I don't know if you are printing from a home or school computer, or have you tried printing the pages with the lines from home or school? It sounds like it could possibly be something in the printer settings, but I am not sure. If you haven't tried printing the pages with the lines from your school computer, give that a try.

I order first grade Jouney's packets from you all the time. For some reason I can't open the unit 4 lesson 19 on my home computer. It did open at school but I don't have a color printer at school. One of the best things about your packets is the fabulous color layouts. Do you have any guess as to what might be happening?

Hi!
That sounds weird (ugghhh technology). I have no clue as to why the file would open on other computers but not your home computer. Do you have the correct software needed to open the file on your home computer (something to unzip it and read the pdf file)? Sometimes when I save something that is in a zipped file at school, I still have to re-extract it when I look at it at home (even though I did that on my work computer). I don't know if you saved it to a thumb drive while at school and are trying to open it from the thumb drive or are you trying to download it from tpt and open it? I would try re-downloading it from tpt at home and see if it works that way. If you are still having trouble you can email me at twirlybirdteaching@gmail.com and I can try emailing the file to you.

First off, I want to say I LOVE your Journeys bundles!!! They have made literacy centers so easy for me and very appropriate for my kids, of all levles. I'd like to know when Unit 5 and 6, especially 5 will be available. We are still at the beginning of Unit 4 but I have an intern and now have time to get all the stories printed and organinzed:)! I also got a project fully funded through Donors Choose and am eager to get all of my centers printed now that I have the supplies! Thanks again for all of your time and effort that you put into these centers.

Right now the only thing I plan on adding to my reading curriculum to cover the common core (and supplement Journeys) is comparing different versions of the same story (but from different cultures). I was going to do this with different versions of Cinderella in January, since our grade level will be going to see the play Cinderella that month. As I am going along I keep comparing each story and the skills for the story to the common core and making notes of any differences I see (for example the Journeys story Jellies comprehension skill is fact and opinion but the common core doesn't say anything about 2nd graders learning fact and opinion) and how I will need to tweak it for the future. My district provided training for the common core has been abysmal, but they have absurd expectations for us. They basically through copies of our grade level common core standards at us and we had to watch an hour webinar (and that was it), so my colleagues and I are navigating our own way through it.
For math and the common core I am probably going to have to add more to my curriculum when I get to the chapters on Math, Time and Measurement. The Go Math Series does not cover all the common core requirements for those areas. My daily math warm up covers some other minor things that common core requires but Go Math does not go over much (being able to add/subtract 10 or 100 mentally from a number, odd/ even etc.)

I am not sure what blackline masters to the decodable readers you are talking about. My school did not purchase them for us and I looked on Think Central and could not find them for the decodable books. We do have black line masters for the leveled readers (but not decodable), they are just a lesson plan format to use and a question sheet that you could copy for the students to use. I do not copy them for the students to use.
I use the decodable readers as part of my "making words" time each week. My district did not purchase books for the students to use, so I project the stories and we read it together and look for words that follow our phonics skill for the week.
I have also put them in my student's online thinkcentral library so they can practice reading them at home.

Do you use some during shared reading, some during guided and some for students to do independently while you teach guided to others? I'm on lesson 2 and just trying to organize everything. ;)

I use the activities all different ways for whole group, guided reading, indepent. work, cooperative learning etc. (I sometimes use the same activity different ways during the same week, because I feel it is just reinforcing the skill)
Each class is different so you have to think about what would work best for you and your students.
I will give you an example of how I would use the activities in THE STORM :)
To introduce the phonics skill short i I would use the activity from the unit Building Words with Short i and complete this in a pocket chart. This would be taught whole group. I would also use this same activity during guided reading for my lowest group using the word building mat.
The next day I would use the Words with Short i word sort during whole group teaching of the phonics skill and model how to blend the sounds together and we would sort the words as a class. I would also put the same activity in their word work workstation for the students to complete and copy their answers on the recording sheet.
If I Can Spell...needs to be taught as guided practice right now so they become familiar with the procedures and concept. Another day I might model how to complete the sound sort and have them finish it by themselves.
I would use the noun sort to teach the concept whole group one day and also put this in a workstation (to reinforce the skill). We would start the noun tree map another day together, and they would finish it on their own (writing words or cutting out pictures from magazines and gluing them down).
I would recommend teaching how to use the character map whole group right now because it is probably the first time they are seeing it.

Hi Jen,
My classroom is a hybrid, and the only storage space I have for myself/my belongings is a small file cabinet, a closet the size of a small linen closet and a cabinet on wheels that has locking doors. Because of the very, very limited space I have had to play around with how I store my supplemental units. I went to Walmart and bought these clear containers that have a lid with clear green handles that are stackable (they are not the crate sized ones, they are more slim lined). I also purchased hanging file folders and file folders. I use one container for each unit. In each container the stories are seperated by a hanging file folder and everything for each story is kept within that hanging file folder. Within the hanging file folder I keep the center activies individually seperated (the cover page goes in a big gallon size ziploc bag with the word cards in a quart size bag, store within the gallon size bag). I keep the black line masters for the story in a file folder, and that file folder goes in the hanging folder for the story. I also store the spelling word cards etc. in the file folder in a quart size bag. My husband is also a teacher who uses these units (and who has a huuuge classroom with lots of storage) and he keeps them pretty much the same way I do, except the hanging file folder is in a file cabinet (because its a tall file cabinet with 4 drawers), instead of a bin.
This is only our 2nd year of using Journeys and so far this year the way I am storing the activities is working for me. I simply take out the hanging file folder and everything I need for that story is right there. I know many people store units like this in the big manilla folders, but I don't like trying to stuff everything in and pulling stuff out. To me opening the hanging file folder, and having everything seperated by activity already is alot easier.
I will have to take pictures my bins one day soon and do a blog post on it.

I am SUPER excited to see that you put in a lot of hard work with Journeys. My district is implementing it this year and boy oh boy is it overwhelming! :) We are teaching it using more of a balanced literacy approach so we teach comprehension out of the small binder, phonics/ spelling/ word study out of the large binder. Are your items following this approach or just a supplement? Is there anyway that I could get a sample (just to get a better idea if it is something that I can use in my VERY tight schedule.)

I added a preview file with photos of some of the items included with my product. All items come with a recording sheet and sentence extension. The comprehension items included cover the "target skill" for the week. I usually try to include an activity that uses that comprehension skill and relates directly to the story and a generic activity that allows practice of the "target comprehension skill". As the year progresses comprehension questions will be included to be used with the story, but usually a generic activity will also be included. The comprehension activity that I have included with What is a Pal? can be used either way. There are plenty of items included to practice phonics/word study whether you want to use them as part of a balanced literacy approach or supplemental activities. All items align with the target skills for the week. You can use them for whole group, workstations, guided reading or co-operative learning. The items included work well in any of those scenarios, or if you are using the Daily 5. These series can be overwhelming as it does include alot to be covered in a week. I myself end up having to pick and choose what is the most important thing to cover due to time constraints :)

I could not get this file to download all the way. Suggestions on how to get it to download would be helpful. I downloaded What a Pal, and The Storm with no problem. On the Courious Greoge the download makes it to 2 minutes and 32 seconds then freezes up. Now I am scared to purchase anymore.

I'm sorry you are having trouble downloading. Technology can be frustrating sometimes. I just did some research to try and figure out why it is not downloading (this has not been a problem with anyone else that has purchased). Sometimes tpt is running slower than usual so they suggest you log back in and re-download it. If the system is running slow it could take a few minutes. If it still does not work please let me know your email address and I can email it to you :)
