I am a former fourth and fifth grade classroom teacher who is now a part-time literacy consultant. I have two master's degrees: one in elementary education from Hunter College and one in literacy from Teachers College (Columbia University).
I utilize the workshop model of teaching reading and writing. I give ten minutes of explicit instruction, then students work with partners or in small groups to grow their thinking about the information that was presented in my minilesson. Further, I use strategy lessons (i.e., small group teaching) and one-to-one conferences to convey additional, relevant information. I stimulate students critical thinking skills by asking them higher-level questions during all the lessons, and I incorporate think-alouds into all lessons/subject areas I teach. I develop and implement creative lesson plans, manage classroom activities, use a variety of teaching methods, and strive to make a positive contribution to my students success.
SHINING MOMENT: I have obtained over $32,000 in grants in my first few years in the classroom. Through my grant-writing, my students have received numerous free field trips, yoga classes, drama workshops and much more! My shining moments have been watching my students have access to these projects and trips thanks to the kindness of anonymous donors.
