My Teaching Experience

During the course of my 35-year career in education, I have always tried to bring new ideas into my classroom as well as into my school and district. For twelve years I was the teacher of the 5/6th grade GATE class (until the model was changed to cluster grouping). Over the years I was the resource person at my school for many things, but especially those things connected to the education of the gifted and talented.

I have participated in District GATE curriculum work, and have been a GATE workshop presenter and on-site facilitator for teachers who wanted to learn more about Howards Theory of Multiple Intelligences and how to differentiate for their gifted students. From 2000-2005, I worked as a Peer Assistance and Review Consulting Teacher with a focus on helping Volunteer Teachers differentiate for GATE.

My Teaching Style

As an educator it has always been my goal to teach all of my students so that they can become critical thinkers and responsible young adults. In order to accomplish this, I use different methods of teaching to suit the learning styles of my students to insure academic and social success. It is my personal goal to bring the skills for achieving those same goals to educators who are new in their profession or to those who are looking for renewal.

As a teacher coach, it has been my pleasure to help other teachers create a focus on the pursuit of excellence. However, I have found that there is an alarming number of teachers who are only vaguely aware of the California Standards for Programs for Gifted and Talented Students and their responsibilities for the teaching of gifted and talented students. So many teachers feel that they dont have the time to worry about their GATE students when there are so many very needy, under performing students in their classrooms. I hope to be able to enlighten these teachers and encourage them to nurture their gifted students as well as their at- risk students.
