Sarde, Thank you for your feedback on my Kafka presentation. Did you buy only part 3? I know $15 is a lot for a PPt, but it is over 100 slides long and contains embedded web sites that are very useful for research. Because my graphics tend to take up a lot of room, I am unable to make the entire presentation available as a downloadable product on TeachersPayTeachers. And for $39.99 you could get all three sections of the PPt (on CD) as well as the board game, complete with mini-cockroach playing pawns!

Extremely detailed 70-slide PowerPoint sequence that includes historical background merged with some analysis of the novel and its characters. It seems ideal for use after students independently read the novel (for example, as summer reading). With some editing (removing info about the novel), this could be used as a pre-reading introduction to the novel.

Dear Kathy, The larger backdrop: unprecedented human loss--(55 million people died during the war; 100,000 people were killed when the U. S. dropped the atom bomb in Japan; thousands were starved and brutalized in Nazi death camps)is mentioned in some slides, with notes on how Golding was a naval officer in the British navy during WWII. A quote from the author regarding his ideas about his theme--how the ethics of the individual must hold up against the dictates of any political or social influence, is discussed as well. But there are other slides about the psychology of fear to manipulate group think, and the biblical sources for the novel's title (Beelzebub=lord of the flies), etc. Also information about the novel Golding wanted to counter--the nineteenth century juvenile novel by Ballantyne, THE CORAL ISLAND, which portrays island natives as evil and the shipwrecked British boys as all good--the typical imperialist perspective, is mentioned. So, the entire slide presentation does not focus on LOF as an allegory for WWII, but some slides do discuss the WWII backdrop, Golding's attitudes about the war, etc. Hope this is helpful.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Haley has a fifteen-year academic career teaching creative writing, most recently as associate professor of English at Mary Washington College. At the secondary level, she has served as the 11th grade American Literature teacher at Caravel Academy (DE). She has published poetry and literary criticism in a variety of journals and anthologies including Poetry, The Gettysburg Review, Reading Poetry: An Anthology of Poems; Southern Poetry Review, and Mid-American Review. Her collection of poetry, The Logic of Wings. was published by Cherry Grove Collections in 2004. Haley's Instructor's Manual for Harcourt Brace's College Division (FICTIONS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT STORIES) has been used by post-secondary instructors since 1989.
MY TEACHING STYLE
College/University level: lecture, guided discussion, group discussion. Secondary level: combination of short lectures, guided discussion, student presentations and group activities. I like to incorporate visuals (power point presentations and film) into my class lectures/discussions.

Haley was awarded Individual Artist Fellowships in Literature from both the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Delaware Division of the Arts. She has also had a Fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
