I formerly taught high school mathematics for two years out of my certification area. Although it was challenging, I truly loved it. I was fortunate enough to procure a position in the area of my passion: English. I have taught 8th grade English for five years. I am consistently and constantly seeking out ways or trying to create materials that take the passivity out of the English classroom and inspires some of my passion in my students. I recently finished my MSE in cuuriculum and instruction.
I use a variety of teaching styles depending on what it is I am teaching and the students I have at hand. I often use cooperative learning, whole group discussion, and group games/activities. I also like to use creative individual and group projects throughout my units. I use Literacy Lab and run my classroom in a workshop style with reader's workshop and writer's workshop. I firmly believe that education is not a passive act. The learner must be actively involved in order for interest and learning to occur. As students progress through the grade levels, interactive games and activities become harder and harder to find. This often prompts me to create my own lessons, units and activities that will engage my students.
