Yes, they go along with the evaluation rubric...I use the tally to score the students and a separate rubric for students to evaluate an individual in the inner circle as their comments fall in the following categories: focus, connect, support, elaborate, build upon or challenge, develop ideas and summarize. I am working on revising and repackaging the discussion items as one unit, so I would be happy to email it to you without any additional charge if you will give me some feedback.

Hi, there are many possibilities, but the first step is to pick a topic or leading question. Say your topic is abortion, the following are some possibilities: Americans tend to believe that ending a person's life is immoral or Americans tend to believe that freedom of choice is a number one priority in our lives. It is often said that needless abortions could be prevented by educating our youth or it is often said that making abortions illegal would open up a black market of dangerous, "back alley" abortions. If you are interested, I can create and post a handout or a mock discussion that utilizes those sentence starters. Hope this helps.
