erinmarienolan re: Theme Analysis_Children of the Holocaust Poetry
It appears that the glitch has not been fixed (four years later). I received a document with Dickinson poetry and a few others. Can you please send the documents that I purchased pertaining to Holocaust poetry? Thank you.

Ms. Turner,

I purchased the Rhetorical Terms AP English Language file; however, the answer key was not attached. If you have one available, I would greatly appreciate it if you would send a copy to me at dms229@columbia.edu.

Thank you in advance.

This sounds like the kind of activity my 8th graders would enjoy. Have you updated your online activity to include the instructions you mention below so I better understand how to employ this idea?

This seems a bit pricey...I am looking for a unit that will take at least a week...I am going to be out for a full week and would like to have a self-contained unit for the substitute to use.
Would this be long enough?
Can you give me a better description of what the unit contains.
Thanks!

PMyers81 re: Poetry Island
The thumbnails pics are too small to read so I can't determine if this lesson will be helpful for my poetry unit. Is it possible to get more information about this lesson or a bigger copy of the material in this lesson?
Thank you.

Yes! It's an instructional powerpoint on how to play the game. You can modify the directions, but basically the kids learn how to identify different poetic devices in their chosen poems. We do one device per class period and the poems that have that device are "immune" and cannot be voted off. They then analyze what they like and don't like, and then they vote one off. At the end there is a group winner. Then the groups compete against eachother. It's a lot of fun.

I, too, was just as confused as Clukich. Your response helped a lot, but I still have a few questions:

-When you say you "give certain students directions," do you mean that only SOME students get directions and others don't?
-Do you consider what you already know about your students when deciding which directions to give them (I already can predict who my leaders are)?
-Are there any other post-activity questions that you find valuable to discuss with the students?

Thank you!

I'm sorry I just saw this message!! To answer your questions, yes. I will take some students aside and give them directions. I try to be as cryptic as possible with the others so that they react naturally to the confusing situation. I want them to actually feel how it might have felt for the boys after they crashed on the island. I absolutely use what I already know! I will sometimes, though, give a big job to someone quiet so that they can be leaders. it just depends. Afterward, we certainly discuss personality types. Some people are just more "type A" than others. We talk about leadership qualities and how people deal with stress. Some just shut down. It's a great discussion.

I love the idea of this lesson, but I am confused as to the directions. The pages I downloaded refer to "once the class is outside" but there are no directions for the activity relating to that. I checked your unit plan and in the thumbnails I can "sort of" see that there are detailed directions for this activity on that plan, but I really would like detailed instructions for this lesson. I thought that when I ordered the activity the instructions would be included. Would it be possible to get just the instructions for this activity? The activity seems great, but very difficult to implement without instructions. Thanks!

Sure! The basic idea is to start the "game" when the students enter the room. I don't speak (which is crazy for me!) and I have signs that I made indicating the story of the "crash" they were involved in. I lead them outside, and then give certain students directions. Then I let what happens happen. After about 10 minutes, I become me again, and I gather them around me so we can discuss what happened. Which students stood out as leaders? Which students just sat around? Which students grouped with others? We talk about it, and then we start the novel soon after. It helps them understand the psychology of "belonging." They love it.

Wendy,
The reading schedule for The Chosen references worksheets for after the chapters have been completed. They weren't included. I was really disappointed because they sounded like they would reinforce the literary concepts. I like the plan other than that. Is there any way you could send me the worksheets?

This game puts the students in one of the communities in Brave New World, and asks them to work together to complete a task. I usually do this game after reading through chapter 2. it's a good way to start conversations! You will need to MAKE YOUR OWN SETS OF PUZZLES for the groups to complete using this guide. You will need to sketch a triangle on a piece of construction paper, and then cut it out. Then cut the triangle into several odd shaped pieces and put those into a baggie. Give each group a baggie so they can try to reconstruct the triangle.

I have a few novels like Tuesdays with Morrie, Of Mice and Men. I'm a full time teacher, and I do
freelance work creating lessons, units, and materials. Unfortunately, I can't take POs, but I try to be reasonably priced. Let me know what you need, and I can make it for you if I don't already have it.

Yes. This cumulative test consists of five comprehension questions per chapter. The worksheets I created (sold separately) include vocabulary study as well. The answer key is included. You can either give the test chapter by chapter, or you can give it as a cumulative exam. If you buy this in conjunction with the individual chapter work, you'll also get the vocabulary. I taught this as "outside reading," and gave the kids a chapter per night with the worksheet. At the end of the book I gave the test. I let them use their chapter by chapter worksheets as a study guide. I hope this helps!!! Thanks for inquiring.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching secondary English and Journalism classes for 11 years. I teach a variety of subjects and grade levels, and have worked to create lessons to not only engage my students, but to stay with them once they leave my classroom.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I like to lead the horse to the water, so to speak. I try to entice my students to get into a topic, and then before they know it, they're learning something! I am not a worksheet kind of teacher (in the sense that I give them one and then sit at my desk). I love hands-on, and I love finding new things to enhance the lessons I already have.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I am a fellow of the Bluegrass Writing Project, and served as technology liason for two years. I am also a teacher consultant, and lead PD sessions on a variety of topics. I have been nominated as Kentucky Teacher of the Year four times, and the school newspaper I advise is one of the best in our state!! I love my job!

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Masters in Secondary English Education in 2001. I have accumulated 24 hours since then, and I'm trying to decide what to do with them!! :) I am an adjunct professor at our local community college, and this year I teach dual credit English to seniors at my high school.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am the proud mother of twins, and when I'm not teaching, I play roller derby with an amazing league.
