Thank you Melissa. I can see that you have an alert awareness of what I'm doing in my teachers' products. That also suggests that you are a very serious educator, and that you care deeply for your students. Some teachers are in this profession primarily to obtain what Maslow would call "approval" from the kids and parents. It's hard to set goals higher than that, but, like parents, we need to be teachers first, friends second. We're in this endeavor to give, not to "get." I so appreciate your kind words.

Comments like yours are particularly gratifying! I appreciate the fact that you and your mom find the product useful and valuable. You even ordered multiple licenses. (That's so kind of you!) I'm discovering now, as a retired teacher, that I can make a product much more powerful by adding small but vital details. I scribbled and sketched this little diagram/visual aid literally HUNDREDS of times on the front board of my classroom through the years, in chalk dust, then in black and blue dry erase markers on whiteboards. It surprised me to find out how difficult and time-consuming it was to simply add color and create a pdf from the concept that had been living in my brain for over a decade, but when I finally finished, I realized how much more clearly it can relate the message, and in certain ways, I almost wish I could go back and present it again! Oh, well. Time gets away from us I guess. Thank you for taking the time to relate your story!

Thank you! Yes, you are exactly right. Just as you observed, the reading quizzes have not been written to assess any in-depth understanding of the story. They are "reading checks." If kids actually read each segment of the story quizzed, they will do fairly well. That, I believe, is as it should be. However, as students perform the required tasks in the close reading study guide, learn the value of that process, and begin to apply the methods necessary to carry on their own "internal dialogue" with the author, they and you will observe that their quiz grades will improve dramatically as well.

I'm glad you have the study guide as well as the quizzes. It never ceases to amaze me how many times this story has been twisted into a glorification of war and dramatized as such. In fact, it is quite the opposite. I'd love to see Jim Carey starring as Henry. The producers and directors could take the story line-by-line and make an amazing comedy out of it. Crane was far, far ahead of his time.

Wonderful to hear that! I always felt, after preparing a study guide/quiz combination for my students, that it was going to be a "wow" time in class. And it always was! Oh, sure, I had kids who resisted and whined. But you could see the other kids begin to probe the literature. The clouds cleared, and they started to respect what they were reading in a whole new way. Not all of them were motivated to strike out on their own and read ahead, but some were, and when we began discussing the substance of those study guide questions, every stroke of the author's pen could be seen having its effect on them. This story in particular presents an incredible brand of heroism and defines love in such a powerful way. To think that a man might be fully redeemed in his final act of self-sacrifice, not to set off bombs like a terrorist, but to give himself up so that others may live, is a challenging, refreshing theme in these times.

You're quite welcome. Remember not to force kids to do ALL of the questions. NOBODY reads a story by formulating questions like that throughout (except for some of us crazy English teachers).
I usually have the kids do sessions of close reading with my study guides during class, and then ask them to proceed by formulating a few of their own questions when they take the book home. The credit for the classroom instruction is all yours, ballen1. It works because YOU'RE implementing it with great effectiveness. Whether it's used to its potential or not is up to the individual instructor. You're probably applying it in several ways: discussion, group work, essay topics, reading guide, reading assessment, common core adaptations, common core documentation, etc. And as you say, it is surprisingly useful on multiple levels as well. I work very, very hard to produce close reading experiences because I think they give you a tool that both exceeds standards and enriches the reading experience. This study guide does not delve deeply, as you point out, and I made every effort to keep the examination of plot, character development, and thematic concerns straightforward and extremely simple, "conventional" to a fault, I am afraid. YES! WOW! You get it! Someone finally gets it! Thank you! It's so, so tough to plant seeds in ground that you have to plough all by yourself. If someone goes ahead of you and turns the land just one time, thoroughly, it's a little easier to get in there and work it up a second time. This novel is one of my great favorites for life. I can still remember reading it for the first time when I was sick in the hospital at the age of about ten or so. The nurses and other care givers would bring me scads of comic books, and one was a "Classic Comic" version of Red Badge. Even back at that age, I had difficulty understanding how the producers of those comic books could attach such a shallow interpretation to the story: Boy goes off to war, becomes man. No. Boy stays boy. Boy will never be a man. War has ruined him. Message of story. Read it, people!

Thank you, Robert. I'm glad you recognize the potential for saving time. Some people get a completely mistaken impression about the whole concept behind my close reading study guides. I never have my kids close read an entire story. Most are ill-equipped for it at the high school level. But kids do have to start learning how to have a conversation with an author.

I learned to read the classics a second and third time simply to enjoy them more, but I wouldn't have thought to do so, had I taken another job in life besides teaching high school English. While coaching my students in the skill of close reading, I hope to place them in contact with the inspiration of great writers and thinkers. As they begin to feel confident in those skills, reading becomes intrinsically rewarding to them. That's when they have arrived as students, and that's when I feel I have arrived as an educator. Thank you! I found that a test on the entire play was overwhelming, for me to correct AND for kids to finish. I learned to give a test on each act of the play. In doing so, I maintained the impression that it was only a "quiz." It went very well that way. Must offer some credit to Ethel, my cohort, who decided it was educationally acceptable to test kids after each act. Thank you, Ethel.

I've just gone through the study guide listings for the four staves and substituted a zip file containing both .pdf and .doc versions for each one. Please look over my other products. If you like this one, I think you'll find lots more useful material. And please download my free products to get advice on how best to use the close reading study guides. They should be quite helpful in teaching to the Common Core Standards. Keep in mind, I never force my students to close read an entire book or story. I try to ease them into the process gently.

Mockingbird is one of my all time favorites. I think my work was inspired by the author. She created an extraordinary story. It smoothly and easily lends itself to the teaching of Common Core Standards in reading and interpreting literature.

I really love your stuff. I work on a Mac with Word 2008. Will the macros work? I did read that you recommend 2010 but I'm very interested in your product and need to see if an upgrade is in order.

Thank you so much! I think Macros should work on 2008. (I actually tried the product on a 2008 Office® application on a PC before, but I had to make very certain Macros were enabled. It can be tricky if you're not careful.) Remember to follow the instructions. I'm sure you have to rename the file (add the suffix, ".docm") if you're working on a 2010 Office® app. But if I remember correctly, the trip over to a 2008 did not destroy the suffix; in fact, I believe, with proper "enabling," the Macros went over quite well. The problem is, working from one platform to another, you need to adapt. You may need to educate yourself a bit about Macros in Office® 2008. Make sure you download the preview file first. If that doesn't work, it probably won't work on your computer; I'm sorry. But an upgrade to Office® 2010 should do it. Again, thank you so much. I work very hard to show folks the small things I've learned. But they're important. So are our kids!

Hi, Gene. I don't have a question but a comment on the e-mail you sent. I've been teaching freshman compostion at the community college here for almost 25 years, and I require a rough draft and two re-writes for all papers I assign. It's a lot of work, but I've learned over the years that it does two things: cuts down on plagarism and improves student writing. My students do a lot of peer editing on the first and second drafts.

Usually, I hear folks explain to me that such work is unnecessary, or I hear them claim that a second and third draft will only offer "diminishing returns." Thank you for caring! I don't recall reading a version with only 7 scenes, but I might have. I've been teaching this play a long time. I have 8 scenes in the version I'm reading. Scene 4 has Tom returning from the movies. It's a very brief dialogue between him and Laura. I can see where that portion of the play may be drawn out with lots of physical interaction, and maybe it deserves status as a separate scene. However, it appears to "spill over" into the next scene. Stage instructions in my version simply say, "Scene is the same." Still, it is separately designated as "Scene 5," and it opens with a church bell tolling 6 a.m. Amanda is calling, "Rise and shine!" Is it possible that these two scenes are run together in your version? This is quite interesting. Do any questions in my study guide appear to apply to a non-existent series of events in your version? I'm curious to know.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Retired in 2007 from 32 years of full time teaching English/Language Arts. Started selling at TeachersPayTeachers that same year. I'm still teaching summer school every year and filling in occasionally as a long-term substitute as needed. Also coached football and track for most of my career, so my approach to education has taken on attributes of "coaching" kids through skill-building experiences. I don't believe in merely passing on "declarative" language. Kids who have me as a teacher generally agree, I do things differently.

Since a large share of my teaching materials consists of "close-reading" study guides, I thought I'd explain how I use them. I always liked working out in my younger years, but have taken to walking, biking, and milder forms of exercise of late. I enjoy classical music. I have two grown children, girls, born 1978 and 1981, from a previous marriage. I'm remarried as of 2003, and have a new family of three step-daughters, one out and on her own, one recently graduated from college, and one finishing high school.
