My Teaching Experience

I have taught 6th grade social studies(world cultures) for 33 years and I have been writing professionally for over 25 years.

My Teaching Style

I use lots of hands out activities in the teaching of social studies. I utilize science, art, music , and Language arts in my classes. My To Tell the Truth Plays have been developed on famous people in history(American and World) and are very popular with my students. I also have developed a number of cyberhunts(which you can obtain for free at my website: http://www.gailhennessey.com which combine computer skills with areas of social studies.

Honors/Awards/Shining Teaching Moment

In 1989, I was honored by both the NYS Council for the Social Studies and the National Council for the Social Studies, "Outstanding Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year." I am the author of six books for teachers and young people(the most recent by Scholastic Professional Books and Teacher Created Materials). My articles have appeared in 34 different publications and I write often for Scholastic News, Ranger Rick and Super Science.
