There are three prompt options I give to students, although to avoid taking all the best ideas, I use an exemplar essay that responds to a totally different prompt, one we no longer use. The prompt for the exemplar essay was "Which character in the novel is the most courageous?" but the three prompts I give students as options for writing their expository essays on To Kill a Mockingbird are these:

1) Jem and Scout’s ideas about what constitutes courage change, until they finally realize that real courage is the ability to stand up for what you believe in, no matter how difficult that is
2) Jem, Scout, and Dill’s life lessons (learned outside of the classroom) help them to mature and better understand life’s more difficult situations
3) In the town of Maycomb, prejudice is a disease, but Jem, Scout, and Dill are immune to this illness because …

I divide the class in half, and have one half of them do the CSI activity, deducing what happened based on the evidence and eyewitness testimony, while the other half of the class has to use the list of things they have available to escape and not have their captor pursue them. So one half of the class looks at the perspective of the authorities who assume (based on the crime scene) that Huck was murdered (at first suspecting Pap, then later Jim), while the other half has to think like Huck and figure out a way to escape. A few will even think of faking their own death. Anyway, in either case they are working in groups of three.

I'm having trouble figuring out the directions, just not clear to me as is. Perhaps I should have bought the Worksheet version? It's not a lesson plan; it's a series of worksheets where students use the examples given and the directions to figure out how to properly format quotations according to MLA standards. So, a snapshot of the page, then a word processed version of that, and (given the rules, and examples) students are to format quotations according to MLA standards. You have the students download the document (in a computer lab) and word process the quotations and format them correctly, then print them out, show them to you, and you sign off on them if they are correct or tell them what they did wrong and need to fix if they didn't get it right.

I purchased your Huck Finn lesson for chapters 3 to 6 and it did not include photos so I then purchased the set of photos to go with the crime scene. In reading the lesson plan, it says to divide the students into groups and that each group will have an envelope. But I can't find anything that tells me what goes in the envelopes, how many envelopes, who the envelopes are for (groups or for the sheriff, detective, etc.). It states there are 8 groups 4 of each???? Could you please clarify as I am really excited about doing this in class Wednesday? There are only 5 pictures, is that all of them? PKeefe1845@aol.com

What goes in the envelope is the five pictures, plus the witness statements and the 'arrest warrant.' I would divide the class into eight groups of four each (assuming class size of 32). Half of those groups get the envelope to solve the crime. The other half get the worksheet with the list of items and the task of figuring out a way to escape and not have their captor follow them.
