TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Over the past 8 years, I've taught in both Catholic and government primary schools, ranging from grade 3 to grade 6. I've also spent some time working with young Korean students at an English language school, and did some CRT work in a number of different schools. As well as being a generalist classroom teacher, I spent two years teaching PE part time. The past three years have been spent in a team-teaching situation, working with a variety of students including many PSD/integrated students and ESL/New Arrivals.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Very focused on using student data to drive my planning and teaching - no point in teaching what they already know!! I tend to use hands-on, open, real-life experiences to engage and motivate students. Peer tutoring plays a large role in my classroom, as does the use of ICT and student-negotiated curriculum. I currently team teach a class of 52 grade 5/6 students. My teaching partner and I have grouped our children for Literacy and Numeracy so that I am working with our high flyers (some extending well into Year 10 standards) and those considered 'at-risk'. This means a lot of modified programs and ILPs. My main goal is to teach the Integrated students the life skills they need to succeed in the real world. Plus I'm often found performing a random jig in the middle of a lesson. Just to keep them alert...

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I completed a 4 year double degree in Arts and Education at ACU Melbourne. At the moment I'm in the process of applying for further study in the area of Mathematics, particularly focusing on intervention and extension.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I'm a chronologically 29-year-old from Melbourne, Australia. 'Chronologically' because some days I feel 70, others I could be 12, and most people think I look about 17... If there's anyone interested in doing a teaching exchange between Australia and US/Canada, please contact me! I'm more than interested!!!
