Time capsules are so much fun! The kids get such a kick out of doing this project each year and it is a great learning opportunity as well. I think it really helps students to think about what they want to accomplish during their year in first grade. In my own classroom I have been doing this project sometime during the first two weeks of school for the past four years. This file includes printable downloads to complete the project. Included are: a description of how I use the materials in

Students complete the packet the first week, and then look at it at the end of the year to see how much they have changed! After they close up the openings and decorate the outside, I store them in my closet until the end of the year. If you don't have the time or

This is a great way to start (and end) your school year! Students answer questions about their "favorites," write a letter to themselves and trace their hand and foot. At the end of the year, give students back their time capsules and they LOVE seeing how much they've changed and grown! This is also a great diagnostic test for writing abilities (through the letter component of the capsules).

I created this time capsule as a fun beginning of the year and end of the year activity. In the beginning of the school year the students complete the far right column. At the end of the year the right column is hidden by being folded over and after the middle column is completed, they open it up to see how much they have changed and grown. They count how much is the same and different to see who has changed the most in the class.
