In this bundle of lessons for Jane Meddaugh’s classic, students will actually have Martha speaking with their paper bag puppets. Like all the Primary GATE literacy units at Portable Gifted and Talented, this is fun, hands-on, participatory, and full of critical thinking challenges for your younger thinkers. I needed a way for my students to access Martha Speaks, so i started off by creating this sequencing activity, the pictures are photos from the story making it easier for my students to put the events in order by looking back at the story if they needed to.
Do you want to make sure students paid attention to whole group reading? Or maybe you want to have a reading center to help students with their reading fluency and independent work? Maybe you want to use this as a reading center and have the story for your students to read the story (or listen to the story) and then complete this deck of Boom cards. Anyway you want to use this I have done the comprehension check for you! This download includes a Boom Learning deck of 26 comprehension questions.
Another addition to Martha Speaks. If your students do not have the verbal skills to identify the characteristics of Martha Martha Speaks, this can help! I only included 5 characteristics. I also included those same characteristics as flashcards. I reviewed the flashcards with my kids first and they were able to match the pictures. Unfortunately i could not delete the first blank page. However, it does not interfere with the rest of the document.
Made with boardmaker, i created a accessible worksheet for my students for my Martha Speaks unit. the majority of my class cannot read so i the visuals help them with the answer. If you are not familiar with Boardmaker, it uses picture symbols for visual learners; great for students with autism, down syndrome, speech and language disorder, and behavioral disorder. *Sorry it is large, it is the way boardmaker made it look
One of the best ways to increase comprehension is increasing vocabulary. One of the ways I try and do that is with Martha Speaks. I have done this in my classroom, as a center, during snack time, even homework. We simply watch a 13 min episode of Martha Speaks on pbskids.org. Each episode features several vocabulary words (I have them listed in this set by season and episode name and number). This is a PREP FREE lesson. You don't even have to make copies. I provided a sample of how I use it on t

This 19 page download is a fun way to celebrate Thanksgiving with your kiddos while incorporating the speaking, listening, and writing Common Core standards.
The first part of this download is a classbook activity titled "Mr. Turkey, Mr. Turkey, Won't You Come To Dinner?" A great way to launch this lesson is by reading 'Twas' The Night Before Thanksgiving' by Dav Pilkey and/or 'A Turkey For Thanksgiving' by Eve Bunting. Both books are about turkeys who "escaped" being eaten for Thanksgiving d
This is a word maker activity based on the book Martha Blah Blah, which is part of the Martha Speaks series. In the book, letters are removed from the alphabet soup, making it impossible to understand Martha. Students use the letters that remain in the soup can to form words that Martha would be able to say correctly. PLEASE NOTE: To provide enough room for student work, the activity has been created on legal size 14" paper.
I am teaching a Deaf History unit and since we don't have time to read the whole book, Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language: Hereditary Deafness on Martha's Vineyard, I went through the book (after having read it in college) and made a teacher Tab Book version to use as an example with my students when we read specific parts of the book together. The interactive notebook template can also be found on TPT. This is just an idea to inspire teachers and/or if you want to use my version, go ahead! While
