The purpose of this unit is for students to identify, understand, and analyze the heroic archetype and some of its variations in literature and real life .  The chosen text will require students to understand the culture of Afghanistan and how culture impacts character actions and decisions. While many different angles for this novel can be analyzed, students will be focusing on the quest that each character goes through and analyzing the heroic aspects of the text as well. If you are teaching your students about other cultures, I highly recommend having them do a reading on A Thousand Splendid Suns. While reading the book, there is a documentary called, Half the Sky, that you could introduce them to so they can make connections with human rights issues they may see in both the book and documentary. This is just a sample lesson of what you could do during this time in a unit.
