PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

-AI or -AY?

This unit contains activities to reinforce the use of -ay and -ai words. Two levels for differentiation are provided.

Level 1--Pages 4-28

1. Spin a Spinner and Create -ai and -ay words. Use a paper clip, held in place with a pencil, as a spinner.

2. Mystery Word Game. Students read words from clue cards, and write their responses on record sheets.

3. Long A Word Sort. Students sort -ai and -ay words into categories and record responses on a record sheet.

4. Writing Activities. Practice writing words with -ai and -ay, and writing sentences using -ai and -ay words.

5. Word Hunt. Students hunt for -ai and-ay words and color the word boxes the color indicated in the color code box.

6. Spin a Word. Use a paper clip as a spinner. Spin a word, use markers to cover letters on a game board.

7. Build a Word. Students cut apart letter squares and build words dictated by the teacher.


Level 2--pages 29-86

1. Word Sort. Students sort -ai and -ay words into categories and record responses on a record sheet.

2. Build an -ai train and an -ay haystack. Students cut word cards apart and glue them in spaces following a train or a haystack.

3. -Ai and -Ay matching game. Students match picture cards to word cards and then write their words on a record sheet.

4. Build A Rhyme Activity. Students cut apart beginning consonant cards to create words that rhyme. Responses are written on a record sheet. Students write sentences using words they created.

5. Mystery Word Game. Students read words from clue cards, and write their responses on record sheets.

6. Writing Activities. Practice writing words with -ai and -ay, and writing sentences using -ai and -ay words.

7. Word Search Puzzle. Students do a word search puzzle and fill in blanks in sentences using the -ai and -ay words.

8. Swat a Word. Students play this game in a group of three. Words are on fly cards. One student reads an -ai or -ay word from a flashcard. The other two students have fly swatters and search for the fly card with the indicated word. The student that swats the word first keeps that card in his/her pile.

9. Spin a Word. Use a paper clip as a spinner. Spin a word, use markers to cover letters on a game board.

10. Build a Word. Students cut apart letter squares and build words dictated by the teacher.
