Product Description
These four STEM projects are designed to introduce the basis principals of flight science. Each unique project helps students understand the Engineering Design Process as well as challenges them to create the best possible paper airplane design.

Distance (50 minute lesson)Students create two different types of paper airplanes to test and collect data on which airplane can fly the furthest distance.

Accuracy (50 minute lesson)Students choose between two different designs and create an airplane that they think will accurately hit a target from 10-feet away. After five initial tests, students are able to use extra material to make improvements to their design and then test five more times to compare before and after results.

Flight Time (50 minute lesson)Students build paper helicopters and airplanes to test the effects of different designs on Flight Time. Students collect and test data to compare results between their helicopter and airplane design.

Launchers (50 minute lesson)Students build an airplane launcher to test the effects of using a launcher on distance performance of the “Bullet” airplane.

NGSS Standards Addressed:

K-2-ETS1-1 Engineering Design: Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.

K-2-ETS1-2. Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.

K-2-ETS1-3, Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs.

This Unit Includes:

- 4 days of highly detailed, step-by-step lesson plans that can be used as designed, or modified for your specific students. Lesson plans are in the 5 "E" format and are a great resources for your STEM unit.

-A complete list of all materials needed for each activity.

-4 days of student worksheets. These work sheets are used to progressively grow your students understanding of Flight Science and the Engineering Design process.
