This 50 minute STEM project is designed to introduce the basis principals of engineering and to challenge your students to design and build chairs using only paper and tape.
Using the everyday item, the chair, your students discuss the functions / structures of chairs and debate the age old question, Is a toilet a chair? Taking their understanding of how a chair functions, your students apply this knowledge and use paper and tape to design, and build a paper chair that meets the project's requirements.
NGSS Standards Addressed:
K-2-ETS1-2.: Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
ETS1.A: Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems: Before beginning to design a solution, it is important to clearly understand the problem.
3-5-ETS1-1 Engineering Design: Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
