If you are looking for a cute art project or coloring page, I regret to tell you that this is not that! This wonderful product is however a wonderful tool for Common Core. The way Common Core is taking students is towards non-fiction passages and then relating that to detailed writing passages. I have written a set of 6 non-ficition passages on 6 inventors. My students have enjoyed doing CLOSE reads on each inventor. The inventors include: Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, The Wright Brothers, George Washington Carver, and John Deere. I am amazed how even my lower performing students can gain so much information just by participating! After doing CLOSE activities, my students then fill out the graphic organizer. The organizer is already set up to pull out ideas from the story and write them in completed sentences. Students then can use the graphic organizer to write a detail paragraph on each person. They LOVE it! I have seen several students also extend research by checking books out on the inventors and searching online for more information. You can also take it a step further by having students complete the compare and contrasting worksheets at the end. If you like this product, check out my Women's History product as well. It's the same concept. Common Core Aligned! Update: I made this last year before knowing the the McGraw-Hill series Wonders has a week long invention unit for third grade. This works great with my third graders this year! My students loved it even more this year in third grade.
