-OU or -OW?

This unit contains activities to reinforce the use of words with the vowel combinations -ou and -ow. Two levels for differentiation are provided.

Level 1--Pages 4-30

1. Mystery Word Game. Students read words from clue cards, and write their responses on record sheets.

3. Vowel Combination Word Sort. Students sort -ou and -ow words into categories and record responses on a record sheet.

4. Word Hunt. Students hunt for -ou and-ow words and color the word boxes the color indicated in the color code box.

5. Writing Activities. Practice writing words with -ou and -ow, and writing sentences using -ou and -ow words.

6. Spin a Word. Use a paper clip as a spinner, or the spinner provided. Spin a word, use markers to cover letters on a game board.

7. Build a Word. Students cut apart letter squares and build words dictated by the teacher.

Level 2--pages 31-92

1. Choose the Right Word. Students have a record sheet and sentence cards. Students use a word box card to choose the correct word to go in the blanks on the sentence strips.

2. Word Sort. Students sort -ou and -ow words into categories and record responses on a record sheet.

3. Is it a Cow or a House? Students cut word cards apart and glue them in spaces below a cow and a house.

4. Cow Word Slider Activity. Students slide paper sliders with letters through a picture of a cow to build -ow words.

5. House Word Slider Activity. Students slide paper sliders with letters through a picture of a house to build -ou words.

6. -OU/-OW Speed Read Activity. Students shake a dot cube and see how quickly they can read the -ow or -ou words in the column below that dot cube number.

7. Build a Multi-Syllable Word. Students use printed syllable cards to build multi-syllable/compound words containing the vowel combinations -ou and -ow.

8. Build a Rhyme Activity. Students manipulate onset cards to build words that rhyme. The two activities include words that rhyme with crown and hound.

9. Mystery Word Game. Students read words from clue cards, and write their responses on record sheets. All responses are -ou or -ow words.

10. Writing Activities. Practice writing words with -ou and -ow, and writing sentences using -ou and -ow words.

11. Spin a Word. Use a paper clip as a spinner, or the spinner provided. Spin a word, use markers to cover letters on a game board.
