This unit is a storytelling unit that is probably best for Spanish 3+. The unit
is based around the song and video "Si tú la ves," by Nicky Jam ft. Wisin.
The video is actually a promotional video for tourism in Ecuador (click here
to read an article about it). The song is catchy and repetitive and we think it
will be a hit with students! The video shows the beauty of Ecuador and will
hopefully inspire them to travel there. There are two lines that teachers
should be aware of: "Trato de borrar tu huella con un cigarro y una botella"
and "Ahora una botella es lo que ahoga el amor por ella." We ignore those
lines, as the focus is really on the story, the video, and the chorus.
A storytelling unit is not like your typical, traditional unit. There isn't a
vocabulary list and there aren't any specific grammar rules that you teach.
But students will learn lots of vocabulary and grammar structures (like "Si
tú la ves, dile…). If you have never done a unit like this, we hope you will
give it a try! Using storytelling units like this makes it easier to stay in the
Target Language and to automatically infuse your classroom with culture.
Also, students will love this song! This storytelling unit in particular really
touches all of the 5Cs as well: Communication, Cultures, Connections,
Comparisons, and Communities.
