This engaging alternative to traditional word sorts will help your students master the final /shun/ spelling patterns. Students mix and match initial word chunks with 4 final /shun/ spelling patterns in this engaging activity. 85 words are covered, in 6 sets of 15 (suspicion is used in all of the sets to exemplify the –cion spelling). The initial chunk cards show the dog used in the set, and the /shun/ ending cards show it in another pose, activity or costume. By mixing and matching the two types of cards for each dog, all of them can be used to form words. If a student makes a mistake, he/she will likely catch it when they don’t have the proper ending for another word. The cards allow for easy hands-on experimentation with the spelling patterns. Give each student a set (or more than 1 set) of cards. Each set has a combination of –sion, -tion, -cian and -cion words. A recording sheet is included for students to write down the words they form.
To play as a game, choose as many sets of cards as you have players. Put the dog picture cards (matching the cards chosen and equal to the number of players) in a facedown pile. Each player takes a card. This is his/her dog for the game. Shuffle the word cards into a facedown pile (or put them in a paperbag). Players take turns flipping over the top card (or pulling a card). If it features his/her dog, the player keeps the card. If it is not a match, it goes in a discard pile. When a player has 2 or more cards, he/she can put down any two which form a word, after they draw their card for that turn. If a player forms a word with an incorrect spelling, he/she must put those cards in the discard pile. Shuffle the discard pile and reuse when needed. The first player to form 12 words wins the game (or play until one player forms all 15 of his/her words). Preparation is easy—just print out the instructions, word list, word cards and picture cards. Laminate the cards and cut them apart. Photocopy the recording sheet if desired, and let the fun and learning begin!
