Students will practice spelling 1-1-1 (1 vowel, 1 consonant after the vowel, and 1 syllable) words when adding a vowel or consonant suffix to the end of it.
In this activity, students will select a tour guide for their safari adventure. The tour guides are having a competition: which group can see the most animals on their trip.
Students will select a guide and their associated mat board. They will arrange the 36 cards upside down into 6 rows of 6. They will take turns flipping their token to try to land on a card. If they land on it they will flip it over and rewrite the word on the cards with the indicated suffixes on paper or a whiteboard. Students will use the answer key to check their partner's work. If the student spelled the word correctly they get to place the animal card on their guide's mat. If the word is not spelled correctly it gets flipped back over for another turn later on. Game is over when all cards are taken.
Whomever has collected the most animal cards in the end wins!
