My wife and I were truly excited as God blessed us with one, then two, and finally three children. We totally agreed with the psalmist that children were indeed a gift from God. However, when all three were under the age of six, we also identified with the writer of Proverbs when he wrote: “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child.” Our desire was to raise our children in a Christian home and pass on our faith and values.
In reality, we were frustrated and struggled just to get through the day and hope the kids stayed in bed most of the night. I felt guilty from getting angry so often and felt inadequate to teach my children about the things of God. On top of all that, I was an ordained minister and supposed to be an example for others to follow.
As I was praying and searching during this difficult time, I stumbled across a parenting book by Dr. Thomas Phelan entitled 1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12. This book proved to be an answer to my prayer. I immediately began to see how Dr. Phelan’s simple principles of parenting connected with scripture. His ideas included practical ways to implement biblical concepts.
