This is a project designed to provide the teacher will a large sample of individual student writing to serve as an evaluation with high grade value.
Each students final product should yield 5-10 pages for final evaluation.
I really enjoyed this project because it allowed me to gather a large enough sample of each students writing to give a very accurate and detailed evaluation of their writing skills. With a sample this large any matters of correctness or skills which require improvement will in all likelihood surface multiple times. Reading over these projects gave me an in-depth picture of what each students writing strengths and weaknesses are.
This project is a fiction account of a students "dream vacation" to any 4-5 destinations around the world. The assignment is to be written creatively, however the destinations and accommodations have to be based on real places. Listed within the handout are all of the detailed instructions students are required to follow in order to meet the intended curricular outcomes.
This project meets a wide variety of English Language Arts outcomes. Based on my regions outcome requirements I could easily meet half of the dozens of writing outcomes. The remaining I could easily incorporate with small adaptations.
I assigned this project to a couple grade 11 classes and told them I wanted 8-10 pages. Students seemed to really get into this assignment, even the ones who were reluctant to take their writing seriously.
1-2 weeks should be enough time for students to do some simple research and begin the writing process. I did not request a final draft because of the length, but I did encourage students to type their project and booked laptop carts.
The only drawback is if you stick to a 10 page length it can be a challenge to mark multiple classes worth of 8-10 page assignments. In the future I would make the length more flexible and possibly just "redline" the projects.
Hope you enjoy, and that this assignment keeps your classes busy and productive.
