I have been researching how to teach character and empathy in middle school and high school students. One of the products I created to help get students to think about their lives and their actions is this PowerPoint presentation.
I set this presentation to run continuously between classes and at the beginning of class while I'm taking attendance and collecting homework. I do this each day for a week. The students read the quotations as they come up on the screen during the week, and then on Friday they choose the quote that the connect the most with, copy it down and write a paragraph about why they chose the quote. (Some students write over a page!) They discuss their chosen quote with a classmate (someone they feel comfortable sharing with), and hand in their paper for me to read.
I give students participation points for this activity and while I read through their thoughts I get a much better idea of who my students are and how I can better make a personal connection with them.
The quotes in this 20 slide presentation are from men and women across the globe, from all walks of life. Underneath each quote is an explanation of who the person quoted is and a picture of them.
