About Gumdrops for Moppet Tops Books
The Gumdrops for Moppet Tops series is intended to teach CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) decoding, blending, segmenting, and word recognition. Each book is comprised entirely of CVC words with corresponding illustrations. There are 12 pages in each book, including a front cover with title and author, and a final page with a list of words for further CVC reading practice. There is one CVC word and one related picture per page, providing an enjoyable and frustration-free reading experience for your students.
Each book in the series relates its own distinct story, written and illustrated to appeal to children. There are seven characters appearing throughout the series. Minor characters appear in a few of the books.
These are slice-of-life stories, about shopping with mom, playing at the beach, family camping, a day at school, sports, swimming, children’s games, caring for a pet dog, being sick, rainy days, going to the fair, friends coming over to play. They are stories of the imagination, about digging up dinosaur bones, deep sea diving, flying on a magic carpet, meeting a mermaid. There are forty five books in the collection.
Each book comes with a Lesson Plan, which includes a Sequence of Instruction page and Comprehension Questions page. The Sequence of Instruction page is intended to help the teacher manage a balance for teaching phonics along with reading comprehension. The Comprehension Questions page lists a choice of comprehension questions for before, during, and after reading. These questions serve well for class or small group discussions and are a great starting point for written response.
Two formats for printing are included. There is a Booklet format, printed on both sides of the page, and a Flipbook format, printed on one side.
Each PDF Package also contains an Independent Practice Worksheet, which can be used in class or at home. Students use the pictures to retell the story and then practice writing the CVC words contained in the book.
Each picture is hand drawn and digitally edited.
These books are suited for PRE-K, kindergarten, the initial months of first grade, and for struggling readers at any grade level.

Common Core Standards
While many of the common core standards in Reading: Literature (comprehension) may be addressed by use of these books, the primary purpose of these books is to teach the standards under the Reading: Foundational Skills section of the Common Core. The following kindergarten and first grade Foundational Skills Standards apply:
Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.
Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds ( phonemes ) in three phoneme ( consonant vowel consonant, or CVC ) words. (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)
Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding.
Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.
Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds (phonemes).
Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

I have been teaching in the primary grades for eighteen years. I use these GUMDROPS for MOPPET TOPS books as a tool in my own classroom, as part of an extensive and well developed systematic early literacy program - a program which I have pieced together and developed myself over the course of my career.
These books have been part of my curriculum for many years, and earlier versions of them, and the kids love them. They love the stories, they love the pictures, they love the characters, and they love being able to page through a book and with varying degrees of effort, depending on the child, read every single word. These books work. They work well for children just learning to read, who already know the alphabet and most of the sounds that the letters make. I have personally used these books with kindergartners, beginning first graders, and as extended review for struggling first grade readers. They are easy first steps, appropriate first steps. Teachers Gather their Own Materials
Year after year we build the toolbox that we use to teach the children in our care. We look for what works for our particular situation and we collect the materials that help us move our kids forward.
Early literacy is about children reading books. Plain and simple. All of the world’s knowledge is contained in books. If children come to love books then they will have a greater chance of success in school.
As a teacher of early reading and as a big fan of real books in student hands, I am always looking for little books that can be used to teach the beginning of reading to my students.
I have collected many books over the years: Bob Books, Scholastic Readers, Right Readers, Rigby Readers, I Can Read books, Step Into Reading books, Hooked on Phonics books, MacMillan Readers, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and many emergent readers published by smaller presses - all books with simple single sentences combining CVC words and sight words. These are all good publications and many have found a permanent place in the reading program I run in my classroom.
Many students, however, get confused and frustrated by beginner books that contain sentences with both CVC words and sight words together. They don’t know if a given word should be sounded out or if it should be recognized as a sight word. Many kids learn the alphabet and are then are passed too quickly onto easy readers that combine cvc and sight words. Many children struggle at this juncture.
I realized early on that what my students needed were books that contained only CVC words. For kids at the very beginning stage of reading - just after or even while the alphabet and its sounds are being learned - there ought to be storybooks with cvc words only. I looked, but I could not find any such books.
Yes, I found books that listed CVC words, books of word families with pictures attached, books of workpages with CVC words for students to trace or copy or match to illustrations…. Yes, there were rebus books - books that use a combination of sight words, cvc words, and iconic pictures to convey meaning - but I could find no books, no story books, with CVC words only.
Yes, I found CVC materials: CVC game boards, magnetic word building sets, matching card sets, CVC puzzles, and much more. All useful perhaps, and well worth having in a primary classroom, but not what I was looking for.
I was looking for books that could help kids to navigate through the very beginning stages of decoding, books that a teacher could use after students have learned the alphabet, but before pushing them onto full sentences. I was looking for books with real stories with only one word per page, produced with the intention of teaching this precise stage of reading.
I was looking for books that specifically targeted CVC words only, without the addition of confusing sight words, books that I was unable to find.

So I Made My Own
I wrote and illustrated the books in the GUMDROPS for MOPPET TOPS series to fill a gap that I saw in the available literature, for use in my own classroom. I developed the stories and drew the pictures myself, worked and reworked the drawings by hand and with digital editing software, wrote and rewrote the stories, changing an ending here, moving a page there, discarding stories altogether and writing new ones. These books have gone through many revisions over the years. Great care has been taken.
I created these books because I had the need in my own classroom. I had students who needed to learn how to blend simple words and I was unable to find the right books to address that need.
There is nothing more enticing to a young child than a book in their hands that they can read.
With this series your students will be able read entire books without the frustrating experience of divining whether to sound a word out or to remember it iconically as a sight word.
Give your students the opportunity to open a little booklet and with a bit of effort be able to read it on their own. Children feel a sense of accomplishment when they are able to read a book by themselves all the way to the end. They feel a sense of accomplishment when they are able to successfully read a page and then turn it because they've read it correctly.
Finally the kids have books that they can read all the way through!
These books will teach your kids to read CVC words. They are perfect for kindergarten and for the beginning of first grade. And they work very well with struggling readers.
The value of a reading program always resides in the books themselves.
