This vocabulary journal is a great way to help students gain and retain new vocabulary from session to session. This is a great resource if you do book units with your students. After we read a new book, I have the students find new vocabulary words to put in their journals. I have found that using this journal really helps the student understand the meaning of the word and gives them practice using it. I also review their journals each week to see if they are retaining the vocabulary from week to week.
Other uses: Obtain grade level vocabulary lists from teachers (or other resources) and pick age/grade appropriate words to add to the journals each week.
I usually send the journals home after every grading period for the student to keep.
I notate how many words they learned and retained for that period.
I included the data reporting log that I keep. My school uses 6 weeks reporting periods so that is how my form is formatted. At the end of the 6 weeks I take the data log out of the journal to keep for my records and to assist when I am writing progress notes for vocabulary objectives.
I started using this method in graduate school (2008) after a mentor introduced book units to me. I hope you find it useful for your students! This resource would also be great for teachers!
