Differentiated ELA Centers with EASY Teacher Prep!

This pack was created to support independent activities for the literacy block. It contains 10 differentiated activities that are slightly different than my other ELA tasks. Instead of creating one task with several different level of difficulty cards, the activities are differentiated by either the complexity of the recording sheet and task or by the actual readability of the task. I made this change to help teachers create meaningful, differentiated centers, while requiring less time to prepare and create! Another new feature I added to this pack is a printable resource poster for EACH center!

The centers include:

• Going on a Hayride- The students will alphabetize given words on cards. The cards have two pictures. For the easiest activity, students only alphabetize the cards with a hayride. This will practice alphabetizing to the first letter only. A second activity is also included. Students will alphabetize all the cards. This will practice alphabetizing the first and second letter.

• Sweet Endings- Students draw cards with sentences that do not have end marks and match the card to another card with the correct end mark. The first recording sheet requires students to write in the correct, missing punctuation. The second recording sheet requires students to cut and paste sentences into the correct type of sentence (interrogative, declarative, exclamatory, and imperative).

• Web of Complete Sentences-The student will match the puzzle pieces to create six complete sentences. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to create and record the sentences. The second recording sheet requires students to create and record the sentences and identify the subject and predicate of each sentence.

• Monstrously Good Nouns- Students sort words cards as common nouns and proper nouns. The first recording sheet requires students to identify and write common and proper nouns. The second recording sheet (front and back) requires students to identify common and proper nouns and then use three of each in a sentence.

• Field of Autumn Adjectives- Students draw cards with sentences and identify the adjective and noun modified. Three different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to identify the adjective and the noun modified when given two choices. The second recording sheet requires students to identify the adjective when given two choices and provide the noun modified. The third recording sheet requires students to write in the adjective and noun modified.

• Expanding Sweet Sentences- Students choose cards with different question words (Why?, When?, How?, Doing What?, and Where?) and use the answer to expand a given sentence. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to expand the given sentence by answering one question on the card. The second recording sheet requires students to expand the given sentence by answering two questions on the card.

• Be a Literary Reading Detective- Students read a literary passage and then can either answer questions about the passage, or can use question stem cards, to create and answer their own questions about the passage. There are three levels of the passage (Beginning 2nd, Mid 2nd,, End 2nd) and two different versions of the recording sheet.

• Be an Informational Reading Detective- Students read an informational passage and then can either answer questions about the passage, or can use question stem cards, to create and answer their own questions about the passage. There are three levels of the passage (Beginning 2nd, Mid 2nd,, End 2nd) and two different versions of the recording sheet.

• Jumping into Main Idea- Students read cards with passages on them and determine the main idea. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to choose the main idea from a multiple choice bank. The second recording sheet requires students to write in the main idea.

• Monster Buddies- Students compare two monsters with a Venn Diagram. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to compare and contrast the monsters using only the picture of the monsters. A color or black and white picture of the monsters is provided. The second recording sheet requires students to compare and contrast the monsters using a paragraph describing the two monsters.

Teacher’s Helpers Included!

This is an additional pack of teacher’s helpers to make your literacy block as smooth as possible! Included in this file is:

• Center Icons for Rotations or Bin Labels- These are square labels that match each of the centers’ cover sheets. These are perfect for center rotations or for labeling bins.
• Center/ Work Stations Menu or Cover Sheet- I created this sheet for students to check off as they complete the center/work station each day. They can also be used as a daily or weekly reflection piece for students.
• Student’s Reflection Rubric- At the end of the week, students have a simple rubric to complete that allows them to reflect on their effort and understanding.
• Simple Grading Sheet- This is a simple sheet for teachers to staple to the top of all of one student’s centers. There is a checklist of all the centers and teachers can score all of the centers for one student. There are four checklists to a sheet.
• Teacher Check Sheet- Editable checklist to mark off if students have turned in all the centers in this pack.
