Formative assessments are critical for teachers to know whether or not students have an understanding of the concepts you’re teaching. We all observe students and the way they respond in class, but it is important to take a few minutes with an Exit Slip or Assessment to see where students actually are on the road to mastery.
With that information, you now know who’s ready to move ahead, who’s somewhere in the middle, and who needs additional help. This will guide your instruction for the following day(s), helping you determine who needs to continue (or be enriched), who needs to be monitored (or meet in a small group) and who needs to be re-taught.
