Product Description
Used for independent reading or with your latest assigned novel, fiction or nonfiction short story... the possible uses for this assignment are practically endless!

Included in this 10 page document are questions on character, setting, plot, theme and point of view, as well as opinion questions for students to answer while reading their novel or short story. There are ten options for reflection and response upon finishing their story: Use them all at once to create different discussion questions from your students in one unit, or use all ten documents separately throughout the year depending upon which element(s) of literature your are trying to introduce or master.

Different worksheets concentrate upon different elements of literature. For example, one document asks the following questions on theme:

• Clearly identify and discuss a central theme from this story in detail. In your opinion, was this theme effectively developed? Explain in detail. Why or why not?

• How did this story conclude? Explore the effect of the story's conclusion on you as a reader. Was it effective? Was it memorable? Was there anything that you would have changed?

While another document asks connection questions:

• Make a personal or “text-to-self” connection to this story. Did any moment in this story remind you of a past experience? Did any character remind you of a friend or family member? What was the effect of this on you as a reader? If you cannot make a personal connection, examine how this lack of connection influenced your overall reading experience.

• Make a cross-textual or “text-to-text” connection between this story and something else that you have seen or read. Did the plot of this story remind you of another story that you have read or a film/television show that you have seen? If so, did this comparison positively impact your overall reading experience? Explain in detail.

• Did this story teach you anything new about yourself or the world around you?

The last worksheet is a summation of the other worksheets, and asks for an essay:

In eight to ten sentences, write your choice of any form of reflection and response for this story. You may decide to write a concise book review, a personal reflection on your reading experience, a critical analysis of a literary technique used by the author, a connection between this story and another text, etc. Please respond thoughtfully in complete sentences in the space provided below.

Used with just about any text you could assign, the possibilities are practically endless!
