This packet contains 100 mental math problems that you can use with your upper elementary students throughout the year. While the majority of the cards focus on developing computational mental math abilities, you’ll also find problems for Ordinal Numbers, Dozens, Place Value, Estimation, Geometry, Fractions, as well as measurement of Time, Money, Length, Capacity, Weight, and Temperature.
Print your Mental Math Warm-Up Cards on heavy cardstock. Punch a hole in each card in the upper left hand corner and place them on a ring. Cards are organized numerically, with each set of math concepts grouped with questions increasing in difficultly.
Most teachers use mental math questions as a daily warm-up activity with their students. They may select a question that reviews concepts from the previous day’s lesson. Or, they may choose a mental math question from a previous chapter topic in order to keep the concept from getting forgotten.
Mental math questions can also be used as an exit ticket – a quick 1-minute formative assessment at the end of the class period that checks for understanding of the day’s lesson.
We’ve included answer slips that you can photocopy and distribute to students. While it’s not necessary to collect written answers to mental math problems, doing so will help you see which students are doing well with mental math skills and which students are struggling. Use the scoring template at the end of this packet to easily track how many mental math problems students are getting correct – and in which concept area.
