This product contains 100 non-fiction stories from Newsela that are appropriate for 5th to 7th grade readers. Each story has four higher-level questions that require the student to analyze not only the story, but also the question.
I began using this the middle of my first year of teaching and watched my students benchmark scores improve dramatically as they realized they had to understand the question and what was being asked prior to answering the question.
I make a class set of the actual story and place a number on the upper right-hand corner to ensure I get them all back by the end of the period and so that I can use them year after year. I make copies of the questions on two-sided pages so that kids can turn in a set of questions so that they are not worth so may points.
I show the picture from each story on the Promethean board so that it can be in color in case any questions relate to the picture or graphic from the article and the black and white copies are not the best quality.
You can easily modify the questions by taking away one answer choice for your lower level readers.
I assure you that students will improve the more they are exposed to these stories and you will see their analytical skills grow so that they may do well on state tests.
Good luck, please let me know what you think!
