Music teachers should spend time every class teaching and practicing rhythms. Most days I spend about 5 minutes reviewing rhythms and offering my students the opportunity to "test" on a rhythm card for extra points in class.

My assessment is simple. I ask the students if they want 1 point, 3 points, or 5 points
1 point - I help them read the rhythm
3 points - Student reads the rhythm
5 points - Student reads the rhythm and then claps it by memory

Rhythm Cards Include 200 pages
Quarter notes
Half notes
Eighth notes
Sixteenth notes
100 pages in black & white (printer-friendly)
100 pages in full color, for projector screens or a laminated teacher's copy.

This simple, yet effective assessment helps me gauge where my students are at and areas I need to work on.

In order to make this a true assessment of their rhythm-reading abilities, I play a drum loop in the background.
