Vocabulary instruction should be explicit and meaningful by targeting those Tier 2 words that cross academic areas. To help us in this endeavor, the editors of the American Heritage Dictionaries have created a list of 100 words that students are likely to encounter in middle school. These words are arranged alphabetically and include the definition, pronunciation guide, part of speech, word origin and an excerpt from a young adult book containing the word. IDEAL FOR TEACHING VOCABULARY ACQUISITION AND USAGE FROM THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS!
Here are some of the words included: knoll, emerge, jostle, zeal, waver, defiance, attentive, persistent, misgivings, havoc, furtive, impending, ember, terse, swarm, somber, and many more.
From this list of 100 words I made flashcards for all 100 words and their definitions. All together, there are 100 words and their definitions. Each page includes 5 words and 5 matching definitions. In my class, I teach a few words each week. Then I use these flashcards to help students learn and retain the meanings and spelling. I begin with a few words and their definitions for my students to match, gradually adding more and more words. My students love to match these words and are learning these words quickly. For additional practice, make extra copies and play Memory with the cards. Send home extra copies for students to practice at home too.
