For this Holiday project, students go through magazines & catalogs and create their own 1000 Dollar Catalog. Using Construction paper, students create a 6 page booklet. Each spread is a different category (sports, entertainment, electronics, food, etc...) On the left side of each spread goes images with the prices attached, on the right side of each spread goes a piece of lined paper where students work out the total price they are spending in the category. The last page is a sum total of all the categories. The goal is to get as close to 1,000 dollars as possible (or 1 Million dollars for those who want the challenge). Other students can calculate the tax and create a pie chart of percentage spent in each category. Students can compare and contrast the decimal values or round. They can even write out how they can use estimation strategies to help quickly calculate the totals. While working, students should store their lined paper, construction paper, and catalog cut outs in a gallon-sized zip lock bag until they are ready to assemble their final product.
