This whole-class or small-group activity builds on base-ten understanding, place value, addition and subtraction, skip-counting, odd/even, and more/less than. Each student gets a 100's chart (included) and follows directions from the teacher, coloring the number indicated by each statement. If all directions are followed exactly, the student will have colored blocks making a huge number "100" on their board. The activity has a built-in self-checking opportunity - students can see at the end how well they followed directions!
The activity can also be done without teacher assistance, either using a student reader or giving the directions to every student to read independently.
